Outstanding book! Concisely explains difficult to understand concepts in easy to understand excerpts and diagrams.

This is an amazing book that explains cardiac hemodynamics for common valve disorders, cardiomyopathies and shock in a very easy to understand fashion. Since the focus is mostly on waveforms and their etiologies, this book is probably best suited for fellows or those that spend time in the cath lab. I highly recommend this text, as it succinctly explains many difficult concepts clearly and with multitudes of diagrams and pictures. It is an essential reference that complements Grossman's perfectly.

This book is a great introductory reference to clinical hemodynamics. I find it to be an easy read. It is perfect for the Cardiology fellow starting in the cath lab! I highly recommend this book to any of my colleagues!

I should disclose that I've heard Dr.Pury speak at two conferences and think highly of her. The breadth of her knowledge and understanding of this subject is palpable in this book making it an easy and enjoyable read. When a grad student buys a book with her .wn money and reads it on her own time consider it worthy of picking up.

Reprint of a Karate Classic

This was the second of what are now 4 special edition reprints of older karate books issued by Master Publication of Canada, run by Don Warrener (Goju). Although this edition of Karate pioneer Motobu, Choki's book is useful and should a part of any historical karate collection, there are several issues which anyone wishing to purchase this edition should be aware of.
The photos have been retouched, severely. Most of what you will see are not reproductions from an original text, but apparently paint or charcoal reproductions (or extreme enhancements, if you will) of the photos from an earlier edition. I found these no more difficult to understand than photos in earier reprints, although some of the ambiance is lost. This Masters Publications "translation" bears a striking resemblence to the English translation put out nearly twenty years before by Okinawa Karate teacher Oyata, Seiyu in 1977("Okinawa Kempo: Karate-Jutsu on Kumite"). Comparing the two texts sentence by sentence, I could not help feeling that the Masters Publications "translation" was simply lifted from Oyata's earlier work, although neither Oyata nor any other translator is credited with this book's work, unlike other volumes in this series. I also found it odd that Masters Publications was not able to translate into common pharmacological terms the exact same herbs Oyata left untranslated. Certainly a professional with today's resources would have had better luck?
Although This newer edition is beautiful (cloth covered boards, cloth covered box, dust jacket, etc.), I must admit that I treasure more the unretouched little booklet translated by Oyata in 1977. For an English translation of Motobu, Choki's OTHER book, contact Patrick McCarthy of the International Ryukyu Karate Research Society.

Only small information for the present time

The work of Choki Motobu is very intersting, but the comments of the editor are not sufficient. The predominent part of the book shows only one charcoat figure on one page and a few words on the other page. There are no words about the basis of Motobus interpretation of Okinawan Karate. In the figures he shows a lot of sequences out of the kata naihanchi ( shodan, nidan, sandan) and some sequence of the Bubushi. He shows atacks to kKyusho points very exactly. But there is no explanation of the new editor, no comment. People who dont know the backround of the special content of Motobus techniques cannot understand the book.

Could have been better but still an all-time classic.

This book is a reprint of Choki Motobu's 1926 original "Okinawa Kenpo Karate-jutsu Kumite-hen", one of the most legendary karate masters to ever live, a true pioneer in martial arts ahead of his time. Motobu sensei was among the first karateka to stress the importance of kumite in the prewar period. The book was reprinted from the original by Master Publication of Canada.
This reproduction of the oldest manual on kumite (sparring) presents the original kumite techniques which were developed in secret by Motobu Sensei through rigorous fights and intense training. They can be definitely described as genuine classical Okinawan kumite, which have little relation to today's sport karate. Motobu Sensei appears himself in the photos, demonstrating the proper execution of the exercises presented.
However the byuer should be aware of a very important fact which is that the photos from the original manual have been severely retouched, meaning that basically they are almost painted sketches from an earlier edition of the book. It is worth noting though that it is a good attempt, considering that some of the photos did not appear in the original and were created based on the context. A vast majority of them still serves its purpose, meaning that they can be easily viewed, however there are some -important in my opinion- details which are gone.
The book has also a nice cover and an insightful forward, plus the very important herb recipies that Master Motobu left.
Personally if I had the option to I would seek the original little booklet with the original photos (even if they had bad quality) but still this book generally holds priceless historic value and it is a must have for any karateka and historian of the art. It is referenced in several martial arts books (rightfully) and we should consider ourselves very fortunate it exists (for the preservation of the original okinawan martial arts). It helps the reader understand the origin and early development of karate.

This is a great reference for any engineer that has to design for welds. This manual is straight forward, well written and full of practical examples. The price is surprisingly low for it's quality and content. The book goes beyond welds and covers basic structural design, loads & stress analysis. The text includes numerous diagrams, tables and illustrations.

I've had to use many different design manuals in my career and most of them are overly wordy and needlessly complicated (not to mention over-priced). This text is much easier to understand and use. Highly recommended!

Low Quality

Terrible book. Tons of typos, grammatical errors, and flat-out incorrect information. If you need this book for a class, only rent. If you are looking at this book of your own free will, DO NOT even consider it. There are tons of great marketing textbooks out there, and this isn't one of them.

EDIT: and as I near the end of the term, it's worth noting that this textbook has the most typos of ANY book that I have ever read, and this is the 6TH EDITION. It's insane what they're charging for this book. Do not even consider buying.

Editing sorely needed!

I bought the 6th edition of this book for my college course. The concepts and information covered in the textbook are sound and useful, but the book is riddled with editing errors. Hundreds of words are missing from sentences throughout and there are grammatical errors as well. I found these to be very distracting and they are ruining an otherwise good book. The book needs a TREMENDOUS amount of editing work. I hope the authors/publishers read this and hire better editors for the next edition. I rated this book with three stars overall because the content itself is good. I would give the editing one star (or less).

This book is pretty terrible. It is an extremely frustrating read, as it is littered with grammatical errors. Many sentences are missing words, and do not make sense at all. I'm glad to see that these authors are charging top dollar for books, but can't be bothered to proof-read them before publishing.

Truly Helpful... With a Heart

I've read quite a few screenwriting books, and what I first noticed about this one was its comfortable, clever tone.

Some of the really big heavy hitters in screenwriting are too expensive and pretentious. They try and function like textbooks. (I have one book in mind that weighs about 3 pounds and costs about $60... and like many text books, it lost my interest when I fell asleep on page 10.)

Hal Ackerman's book isn't very long, and it's an easy, pleasant read -- sort of populist without being condescending. It doesn't take screenwriting too seriously, which I appreciate. At the same time, you get the sense that this UCLA Professor loves helping his students craft meaningful stories that will also sell. (Some of his past students have gone on to write scripts like Matchstick Men and A Walk on the Moon.)

This book's real strength lies in its dedication to helping writers build effective narratives. Ackerman has designed an index card technique called the Scene-o-Gram that helps writers diagram stories so that key emotional turning points and plot points are hit at regular intervals. This forces you to keep only what you need and to lose the rest. Since most writers suffer from wordiness and a total lack of editing abilities, a stringent guide like this is a godsend.

I am an aspiring screenwriter who recently hit a block and stopped writing for several weeks. My romantic comedy is a mixed up mess and my zombie movie hit page 60 before I realized I had no ending. I think this is because I'm relatively new and haven't yet internalized the rhythms of effective storytelling.

After reading this book, I feel like I have the concrete tools I need to help me finish my scripts. I'd describe the book as a method to reign in your madness. Nobody's saying you have to treat your scripts like calculated, mechanical schemes to make money, but the reality is that a screenplay without structure and pacing will bore its audience. It'll never get made. A certain amount of planning will save you time and benefit your writing in the long run.

Bottom line: this book is a great resource for anyone who's overwhelmed by the task at hand. I think it's equally valuable for beginner or intermediate writers.

Great source for the serious writer

I got this book just a couple of weeks ago, and I will admit openly that i am not done reading it, but I have read a lot of it, and he definitely knows what he's talking about. Hal Ackerman's book includes information on proper script format that a lot of other books leave out.

I'll also say that he doesn't sugar coat things for you, he tells you some real hard learned and down to earth facts about the film writing industry and states in no uncertain terms what your chances really are at making it big, getting recognition and what rights you have to your work once its made. I would rather learn about that from him then to learn it the hard way after I submitted my script. He also tells you about the usefulness of script writing software, among other things.

To me it's not really an air of arrogance about his tone, as stated in some other reviews, but an air of realism where he informs you that writing a movie is serious business.One thing that may throw a lot of people off in this book is that he tells you that you must "practice at screen writing" in order to actually be good at it and the book contains exercises at the end of each chapter (writers gym) for you to build your skills.

I wouldn't say that it's a distraction from doing real writing as one reveiwer stated, but something that you must do in order to sharpen your skills. Many other writing books say and include the same thing, and I see nothing amiss here.

All writing takes dedication and work, and thanks to Hal Ackerman we have a very useful guide that not only tells us the truth about screen writing, but helps us to get into it. The four star rating for this book is not deserved, five stars. Also if you're still not sure if you want to buy this book check it out of your local library first and read a bit of it for yourself (I did and I am now fervently seeking to own a copy of it permanently). Then you can see if it's for you.

Inspiration from a Master Teacher

I've spent my professional life directing actors, and a good number of my leisure hours watching plays and films. But whenever I've tried to compose so much as a single exchange of believable dialogue, the characters always wind up sounding like me, and the themes always hit the page with the subtelty of a sledgehammer. The one time I did find the courage to enroll in a college course on playwrighting, the instructor assigned us a two-character, one page scene due the second session. I dropped the class the next day.
So the current everybody-does-it trend notwithstanding, I am hardly the guy likely to sit down and script a full-length feature film.
And yet. Were I ever to be seized by an irresistible impulse to author a screenplay, this is the book I'd return to,
digesting and re-digesting every insightful page. Like any book that attempts to teach a subject (calculus, woodworking, photography), this is, after all, a textbook. But it's literally the first one I've ever encountered that was nothing less than exhilarating to read, with all the forward momentum of a good narrative. Ackerman is never ponderous or didactic, and his prose never stinks of the academy. My sense is rather of a guy who--like any gifted teacher--passionately wants the student to succeed, and is willing to share any and all of his best secrets in order to make that happen (and happen it has, for an amazingly high proportion of his former students!)

His book has all the qualities of a winner in this already crowded field: immense readability, a playful and infectious sense of humor, a refreshing concreteness (I love the fact that in citing examples of successful screenplays, he mentions big pop blockbusters like "Rocky" and "The Godfather" as often as he does 'chic' European titles like "Naked" and "Queen of Hearts".), and--maybe most importantly--a sense that the author is standing by, doing his damndest to get the best out of you.

A lot of book for so little information.

This is one of many books that is about real estate investing. Although well written it is not jam-packed with information. So many times successful authors really connect with a great book, then they do a follow up book hoping to have repeat success. This book is one of those types of books The author takes a short subject and stretches it into a book. In fact, I believe this is one of three books in this series. This book uses a lot of paper to give you a little bit of information. Here is the book in a nutshell...You make money when you buy property not when you sell it... So hold it!

This book is simple and something you can implement immediately. Most investment books give you a PHD but you never implement it, so what good is that. Implementation is 80% of the challenge especially with investing. It's easy to follow and understand from the investor who is starting today for the first time, to the sophisticated investor of many years. You don't need all the bells and whistles you need something simple and something that you can use and implement right NOW. I've been an investor for 30 years and a Broker/Agent and this is the E-ticket for investing in Real Estate. It's something you can wrap your head around immediately. You can tell the people who wrote this book have done it themselves and they’re not just talking about it to sell books. That’s very refreshing to see in today's world of Real Estate investing.

Great book for the library

If you are interested in this kind of real estate investment than this book is great. I would not call it all encompassing though, it is definitely lacking in some areas, but it still has great tips and information for beginners. I would say it focus more on the financial side then the day to day practices, but it does explain the financial really well. Like I said add it to the library but don't rely solely on it.

About the Author
Catherine Westbrook is a Senior Lecturer and MRI Field Leader at Anglia Polytechnic University, Cambridge, UK and external examiner, lecturer and advisor on several other postgraduate courses in MRI around the world. In the past, Cathy has been President of the British Association of MR Radiographers, Honorary Secretary of the British Institute of Radiology and Chairperson of the Consortium for the Accreditation of Clinical MR Education.

Carolyn Kaut Roth is the Director of MRI Internship Programs & Continuing Education for Technologists at the University of Pennsylvania Health Systems, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. In the past, Carolyn has served as President of the Section for Magnetic Resonance Technologists (SMRT), and is currently a Fellow of SMRT. She has lectured around the world and has published numerous books, articles and papers on the topic of MRI. Carolyn is also the CEO of Imaging Education Associates (IEA), a company that develops and produces computer-based education modules and educational curricula for radiographers & educators.

John Talbot is a Senior Lecturer at Anglia Polytechnic University, Cambridge UK and a leader in the development and production of e-learning materials. As well as lecturing MRI around the world, John is a gifted illustrator and his vision has been central to the re-shaping of the figures in the book.

MRI Bible

When I was training at the University of Pennsylvania this book was known as our "Bible". In short, it comprehensivly covers MRI from Atoms to Zipper artifacts. The book can be a little technical at times but unfortunatly, that's MRI for you. It does a great job at explaining the basic concepts of MRI and then building on those ideas to explain the more complex ones (K-Space headaches anyone?). A must for any technologist serious about passing their boards or reviewing MRI physics and implimentation.

This book is an easy to read book that provides an in-depth look at MRI physics. I used this as a review for the ARRT exam for MRI. It was a must buy.
