Amazon.com Review
Ruth Krauss, author of A Hole Is to Dig, has crafted a story almost Zen-like in its simplicity. A little boy plants a carrot seed and waits patiently, tending to it carefully, while everyone around him insists that "it won't come up." His conviction is steadfast, however, and sure enough, a carrot worthy of first prize at any state fair springs forth from the earth. Krauss's husband, Crockett Johnson (creator of Harold and the Purple Crayon), illustrated The Carrot Seed, and while the little boy is rendered with uncomplicated lines, all of his hope, confidence, and serenity shine through. The image that resonates most strongly in this minimalist tale is the unfaltering faith of the mild-mannered little boy. Young readers learn that standing your ground in the face of opposition and doubt can often result in twice the reward expected (even thrice the reward, if judging by the girth of this carrot). (Ages 4 to 8)

Review
"In this cunningly paced fable about patience and standing one's ground, a little boy plants a carrot seed, weeds and waters the spot, and waits for something to happen. A parade of nay-sayers drop by to tell the boy, 'I'm afraid it won't come up.' The big moment is a stupendous surprise...the little hero's homegrown triumph." -- "Parenting"

NO Variety...I do NOT recommend!!
By Just Me
The basic storyline is fine, but was extremely repetitive, and NOT in a good way. Each person says the exact same thing, which is odd because why would everyone insist that nothing will grow from a seed? Isn't that what seeds do - grow into plants?!
The artwork is just OK, with VERY little variety. It is basically only those 2 colors with a tiny bit more color on the last 2 pages. I'd hoped for more because I like Harold and the Purple Crayon, but I was disappointed.
My child was bored by this book.
If you like the overall message, I highly recommend "Thank you, Bear" by Greg Foley. That book is MUCH MUCH better for both artwork and storyline. Thank You Bear Board Book. As an added bonus, it happens to also be cheaper on Amazon at the moment.

One of my favorite books from childhood.
By Annie Tipton
This book holds a special place in my heart and is one of the first books I remember being able to "read" (I had it memorized) as a toddler. It's a simple story about a determined little boy who, despite being told by everyone around him that he will fail, plants and grows a carrot from a carrot seed. The haters hated and players played, and he just shook shook shook it off.

I love this book
By MamaInParadise
I love this book. I am a big fan of Crocket Johnson's Harold and the Purple Crayon books. This one is much simpler and shorter, but has a great moral to it. My daughter likes the book. It is quite short and simple though, so definitely more appropriate for younger children.
