About the Author
Edward Obaidey graduated from the Tokyo Therapeutic Institute in 1990, and has a busy practice in Tokyo. He is the founder of the Japanese Acupuncture and Moxibustion Skills Foundation, an organisation dedicated to the practice and preservation of traditional Oriental Medicine, and has given seminars in England, Australia, Canada, Japan and America. He is privileged to have studied in apprenticeship under Misao Takenouchi sensei and with his current teacher, Masakazu Ikeda sensei for whom he has assisted in the presentation of many seminars abroad. In keeping with his traditional training, Mr. Obaidey’s clinic is a centre both of healing, and of the continuous learning and development of his students, visitors and himself. Edward Obaidey translated “The Practice of Japanese Acupuncture and Moxibustion: Classic Principles in Action” (Eastland Press; ISBN: 0-939616-43-2) by Masakazu Ikeda sensei. This text is highly recommended as an in-depth introduction to classical acupuncture in Japan. The only other of Ikeda sensei’s many books currently available in English (also recommended) is “Integration of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine: Theory and Practice” (ISBN: 978-0-578-06534-2).

The Life and Times of a Traditional Acupuncture Practitioner

Half way through this inspiring book and enjoying the read immensely.
A Long Road reeks of moxa and the intangible essences that circulate through Edward's clinic.
His clinical experience, wisdom and wicked sense of humour radiate from the pages.
This book is a must read for all serious students and practitioners of Traditional Acupuncture and Moxibustion.
The author's English background and alien status in Japan provide a unique insight into this extra ordinary healing modality.
Big ups to all concerned with it's publication and to the author, thank you for opening the Pandora's box at the heart of this fascinating medical art.

Road not long enough

Obaidey-Sensei has given us a tremendous gift; the book is marvelous. We are given a glimpse into the magic of Japanese acupuncture from the perspective and humor of a native English speaker who is fluent in Japanese. So much of our medicine is lost in translation or inaccessible to those of us who don't speak the language. I read it recently on a transcontinental flight, and I believe my fellow passengers thought I had Tourette's syndrome - alternately laughing out loud and crying in others.
There is something in this book for everyone. If you are a TCM-trained acupuncturist or a student of acupuncture, than doubtless many of the techniques will be new to you and will hopefully inspire you to find a teacher with whom you can learn these techniques directly. If you are, like me, a long time practitioner of Japanese acupuncture, then the tools in my box now seem shiny and new again, to be re-explored with different eyes.
But this book is more than a clinical practicum; it feels like a marker along the way. Of particular value to me were the dialogues between teacher and student, some light hearted and truly funny, others inviting a deeper level of inquiry. I saw a great deal of myself in his students, both in their mistakes and also in the call to mindfulness. This book is an invitation to deepen as practitioners, to refine not just our skills but our sense of compassion and service.
It is not easy to be a medical provider in any modality, but I believe it is particularly hard to be an ancillary provider in the for-profit medical system of the US. This book reminds me of why I wanted to practice acupuncture in the first place, and put me back in touch with both the depth and breadth of our medicine, reigniting my own studies. Emotionally, as I said, it was also a signpost along a very long journey saying "Yes, continue in this direction."
I can only wait with enthusiasm for the next installation.

walls have ears

Well, being the first person to write a review on this book makes me feel a little apprehensive and I hope someone else will add to it below! However, I do hold true to my words and as such, if you don't try, then you won't know. Its all very well living life with the "idea" that you will do something, but actually, when you really start from scratch, letting go of any predilections of life you may have had, then actually, you never really know what the end result will be until you actually try it. A true craftsman will have some intimacy with his tools, but ultimately its the the end result that speaks for itself. I myself am an acupuncturist, and I'm proud to say that it was Edward sensei who , as he put it in his own words " rescued me from the abyss". And quite rightly so as before I met Edward -sensei, life to me seemed ok but "lacking something", and that something was a truer and fuller real me ( excluding beer and Spanish sausages ). Now, I am very happy to put myself in the picture which is a hard axe to grind, but I realise that its the only real way. If you want to be good at something, then you have to experience it from the perspective of not being very good. Its all very well living a life where there are "others out there who can do a better job than you" but actually, why not try it yourself. You may be asking yourself at this point what my preamble actually has to do with the book. Answer. Not a lot really! But please, bear with me. I will tell you now that the material within these pages is a compilation of Edward-senseis articles from his self published JAMSF journal and in my humble opinion ( I am speaking from a limited experience ) they are alive now as they were when he first wrote them. Also within the pages are transcripts from discussions with assistant practitioners as they took place in his clinic recently. Its a book that you will refer to for inspiration, is alive and will help you in many ways to investigate this art more deeply. It will also give you a real picture of how this art is something that is not , lets say, "exclusive" but can be discussed anywhere with anyone. I see so much information out there written on Oriental Medicine, and really, its as if I am reading something written by High School students. Indeed, they have nice websites, and actually proclaim that they are high level practitioners. Well, perhaps you don't see it! Anyway, buy the book and enjoy it. Over and out.
