Great content for me. I was looking for a Math book that includes TI-Nspire guides as the graphing calculator to improve learning. And this one has lots of this infomation.
The book follows the IB topics in the way that I needed. It has very good explanations and examples, very well illustrated and completed with information about the theory of knowledge. I found a very good resource for my students.
My 4 stars rating is due to the price. It is too high for mexican purchase power, all my students can't afford it. Even for me is too expensive and I have to do a great, great effort to buy it.

Abacus Mind Math is the best resource I have found

I searched the internet high and low for a practical book that would help me teach the Soroban-the search is over! Abacus Mind Math is the best resource I have found, and we use it everyday! Not only is it great on its own, but I had some questions and I called the author (She put her contact info in the book). She is extremely nice and spoke with me until I had all my questions answered. She is currently writing the next book in the series.
Regarding content: It is sequential, easy to use, and comes with lots of practice problems.
Regarding my method (incase you're new to soroban or are looking for other ideas): We homeschool 2 girls (5 &3). I have my oldest do about 40-50min of practice 4 times a week. I DON'T have her practice 40-50 min straight. I break it up into 3-4 segments throughout the day. The segments are listed below:
Segment 1: I have her do 10 problems on her own sitting at the table, good posture, and using proper technique. She reads the problem out of the workbook, keeps her finger on the number she is on, and with her other hand she is moving the beads accordingly. Then she writes the answer in the book. After 10 problems, she is off to play!
Segment 2: After a good break for play 20-30 min or so, I start segment 2. This time I hold the book and she is just sitting with her soroban at the table. I read the same problems to her that she had just done (I check her work at this time, too; I also modify the speed I say the numbers-just to keep her on her toes...or fingers in this case!). And she is off to play!
Segment 3: Mental math time! Again, I have the book and now she is sitting at the table with no soroban in front of her. I ask her the same problems, only this time she has to do them in her head. We weren't having much progress at first but the author told me to make sure she is pretending like the soroban is right in front of her and that she is pretending to move the beads with her fingers; not boisterously-like in the youtube videos, but just like they normally would if the soroban was right in front of them. It's still a struggle, but she has improved and is definitely getting better.
Here are a couple bonus segments that I do:
1) I play a game called BIG friends. I say a number, like 4 and she will say 6 (b/c when you put them together they equal 10)
2) I play a game called SMALL friends. I say a number, like 4 and she will say 1 (b/c when you put them together they equal 5)
This skill will be important down the road when we encounter carry problems.
3) Just have them count.
4) Review the place values (each rod corresponds to a place value: ones, tens, thousands, etc) I will also write a number and ask her what place value is each number in.
5) I will roll some dice and just keep adding or start form a real high number and then we will start subtracting.

My personal thoughts:
I bought Saxton math and their big box of manipulatives and have not touched them. I will eventually use Saxon; however, I have no idea when that will be, because the goal is arithmetic proficiency, and the soroban can handle it all. I have many friends that use Math U See, and I think that it is a better program at this early stage, but again why use all those different manipulatives when you can use one-the soroban. I picture the soroban like a musical instrument- that they will eventually be able to play in their minds. Remember the name of the book: Abacus MIND MATH. Watch some youtube videos of the Japanese or Indian students demonstrating their speed and accuracy with their mental soroban.

Stay consistent and keep practicing! Just do a little bit everyday and you will see great results!

Great math course.

This series of books are everything the other 5 star reviewers say it is and more.

All of the SAI Speed Math Academy books are well written, nicely illustrated, easy to read, follow and understand. They are all well worth the price paid.

It is very difficult to find a good book for learning how to use the abacus and it is next to impossible to find any information on how to learn Anzan - the secrets of mental speed math.

SAI Speed Math Academy has done a great job of making all this information available in this series of lessons that make learning easy and fun.

This book is a workbook - a weekly series of daily math problems and mental exercises. The instruction books are very important because they cover the "how to do it" part of the course with easy to follow - step by step instructions.

I highly recommend all of these SAI Speed Math Academy books.

Very good workbook to buy with the Instruction book

This workbook is fantastic! It has a lot of sample and practice problems that relate to each lesson as well. My kid had an easy time in completing the assignments every day as assigned. Speaking of which, I used the Instruction book to teach them and I felt that the material progressed really well and easy enough for the kids to understand and learn. If you are looking for an Abacus Math book that is fun and will both reinforce and help the student apply and learn the information, this book is a must.

Must Read More

This YA novel reminds me of several movies all wrapped in one, which is impossible given the date of which it was written. The word everyone describes it as irritates me, it is redundant in reviews, each person must use their own imaginations to decide how to describe the scene before them. It is a cross between Divergent and The Giver with a splash time travel.

I dislike writing spoilers as a review, so here we go. A young woman reliving in one realm Autumn afraid of remembering who she is and in where she will wake next. Attempting to blend in although never feeling like she fits in. Where the "others" have control of what is proper and right fearful she may give herself away. Trisha Leigh allows you to live through the eyes and feelings of Althea in this first person magical YA sci/fi, fantasy world.

I enjoyed reading something different for a change, the outcome left me wanting to read more, almost needing to know more of her "Something Else", where did it come from, where will it take her, how did she get it? So many questions to be answered that you are only left with one conclusion; you must read the next book~

Readable, but not exceptional.

This book starts off slightly confusing, then plunges directly into completely confusing before slowly climbing back into making sense. I tend to like the structure of a writer presenting lots of pieces, and then linking them together over time so you can go back and reread it and see things you didn't the first time, but this one doesn't really execute that well. Instead of subtly inserting bits of hints of what's going on, the author just kind of throws the puzzle pieces on the floor and waves her arms until they all finally come together in a cohesive manner.

As far as the characters go, it's hard to really put yourself in their shoes, or at least it was for me. They seemed a little flat, and like some of the time their motivations weren't well thought out and it was easy to see that they are characters and not real people.

The concept is a good one, aliens coming and taking over to use our planet for resources, but it sounded a little rehashed for my taste. It was like Childhood's End meets Hunger Games.

It really was a page turner, I didn't want to put it down as the story is fast paced and keeps you wanting to come back, but when I hit the end of the book and saw the "Buy the next book in the series" button I didn't really feel compelled to use it. Reading this book was an enjoyable experience but I don't really feel the need to continue it. And once I put the book down and thought about what I had just read, I wasn't too terribly impressed. But, of course, the time I spent reading it was pleasant and well-spent. I would recommend this for someone who needs a brief break from heavier reading, or just wants something light to occupy them for a few days.

A little slow and strange at first, but picks up and takes off quickly. Excellent series!

I have written a review of the last book - also covering the whole series - but wanted to write a review for this first one as that's of course where everyone will start. (Duh!)

This series is wonderful, thought provoking, well written, character and plot driven and quite unexpected in several aspects. I read all four books over the space of three days - they were that good. I'm not really a fan of alien/sci-fi books, but the description of this one tugged at me and I'm glad I took the plunge. This one doesn't just stand on the genre and leave it at that. It also weaves in the common teenage angst weighed against the mind control of the main character's peers. The difference is startling and really drives the plot.

The way the story slowly unfolds is intriguing and yet kind of frustrating as well. The author stays true to her main character's point of view, who is describing her world based on her experience of it and therefore uses descriptions and terms that are foreign to the average reader. A case in point is her describing a music CD case and disc that threw me for a loop at first trying to figure out what the heck she was talking about. Then it dawned on me and I realized that yes - if one didn't know what it was already, that would be exactly how it would be described.

Once one has the terms of the characters' world down, however, the pace picks up considerably and the story becomes very intriguing and the need to turn pages and find out what happens next accelerates.

SPOILER:
One thing I would like to address - one other reviewer said she was not comfortable letting her teen daughter read the book because of the kissing and skin to skin contact between Lucas and Althea. However, I thought their relationship and their discovery of how powerful their attraction and physical "need" for each other could be over-whelming at times was handled very maturely. While they do engage in some deep kissing and some VERY tame skin to skin contact - a finger brush across the stomach, for example - they very maturely decide that they are not ready to go beyond that because of their obligations, number one, and also because they know that there is no going back once that step is taken. I thought it was handled very well.

Bottom line is that the book is good once you get past the strangeness and despondent tone in the beginning, and it sets up a very satisfying, exciting series that I highly recommend.
