Super Fun Follow Up to The Allegra Biscotti Collection

Allegra Biscotti, groundbreaking new fashion designer, has a secret. She is actually a 14 year old girl named Emma Rose living in Manhattan. In book 1, The Allegra Biscotti Collection, she is accidentally discovered and asked to keep silent about her real identity. After all, who would take a 14 year old fashion designer seriously? In this installment, Emma is asked to design a collection for an exciting display AND a dress for a swanky Sweet Sixteen Party for a student at her school. With a bumbling new Italian assistant, a best friend who doesn't understand why Emma is so busy all of a sudden, and the mother running the Sweet Sixteen Party all trying to make Emma's life more difficult, how is she ever supposed to get the new collection designed in time?

Obviously this book is written for younger than YA. The back of the book labels it as Juvenile Fiction/Independent Reader, and the content is certainly appropriate for young children. I enjoyed this book because it was so fun, and Emma's best guy friend, Charlie, is hilarious. I would love to be friends with him even now. The descriptions of the clothes are also really fun- I wish there really was an Allegra Biscotti!

One thing that I would change about the book is that I was totally convinced that there was a sinister sub-plot brewing, but the climax was actually a bit of a let down. The "action" ended too soon, in my opinion, but the ending was also really sweet. Sometimes it is nice when everything works out smoothly in the end, and perhaps it has been too long since I've read juvenile fiction of this type.

I would recommend this as juvenile chick lit, and girls around the 3rd-6th grades would probably enjoy it. It was very easy to read, and it might be a good "book club" type book for girl scouts or something- there is definitely a positive girl power message. It could also be a great book to read to kids before bed. Super cute and very fun.

Beautiful Art Deco Figurines in a Beautiful Book

If you love art deco, you will love these beautiful figurines. I'm an Erte fan, and these figurines are as energetic and graceful as anything that Erte has done. The book's large format is perfect for the large, full-color photographs with one figurine per page. The only regret you'll have is if you don't buy this book. I came across it at the public library, and I had to have it. It's worth every penny. (see Oct. 2014 Caveat)

Oct. 2014 Caveat: In 2006 I paid $58.94. For the casual Art Deco lover, that price ($60) was right, a bargain. It was affordable. Unless you're a collector or have a lot of disposable income, . . . , well, you get the picture. I'd try my local library or maybe a University library first.

Excellent D. H. Chiparus source guide

I found this book to be an excellent research source for the art of D. H. Chiparus. In addition to accurate and detailed information of his work, included is an interesting, detailed personal history. I especially enjoyed the many photographs of his chryselephantine sculptures - great source guide.

The book is filled with technical errors, including incorrect values for data type ranges and obsolete Swift syntax. Had I worked through the first few chapters of this book I'd have never purchased "Programming Swift! Mac Apps 1" by the same author. While Nick Smith maintains a website where errata for his books is published, the site fails to mention any of the far too common and very obvious errors.

While I've been writing software for decades and these issues are little more than minor annoyances to me, this book would be extremely frustrating to anyone trying to learn programming and using the Swift 3 language. To be fair, some of the code would have worked in Swift 2 and even some of the developer releases - it just doesn't work in the final release of Swift 3 in Xcode 8.2.

FYI - Apple publishes "The Swift Programming Language (Swift 3.0.1)" and it is freely available in iBooks format.

Good book for Swift 3. Buy it! Read it! Love Swift!

This is a very good book for learning Swift. I have gone through a few books on Swift. This happened because I started learning swift as Apple started going through the versions. I started with Apple's own book. By the time I got to that book the syntax had already changed and I needed to hit Stack Exchange to get through the examples. Each book has its strengths. The BNR books seem to be the most polished; although the last effort of theirs on Mac Apps was not as clean as the first two I read. This book gives the number one best explanation of completions and how they fit into the big picture. All other explanations are clear but as I said earlier every book has its strengths.

a Swift way to learn Swift!

Nick does a really nice job making Swift 3.0 accessible to the novice programmer. He challenges you with assignments, but offers you his approach to the problem so you do not get stuck. This is so much more helpful than the "Google it when you get stuck" method provided by other books.

I am looking forward to his MacApps 1 (SWIFT 3) edition so I can continue his course of study.

Bruce A. Breeden has had thirty-seven years of experience in the field service industry. After starting as an associate field service engineer, he worked his way up as a field specialist, district manager, service marketing manager, technical support manager, global customer care system project leader, national service manager, director of global services, and vice president of service operations.

Breeden’s career has taken him from a job in the US Air Force to thirty years in the scientific instrument and laboratory equipment industry, and currently in the industrial weighing industry. Breeden has certificate from the US Air Force in electronics, a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies from Regents College, and a master’s degree in business from Pepperdine University. He lives with his wife of thirty years in Asheville, North Carolina.
