Cities in Civilization, by Peter Hall

Ranging over 2,500 years, Cities in Civilization is a tribute to the city as the birthplace of Western civilization. Drawing on the contributions of economists and geographers, of cultural, technological, and social historians, Sir Peter Hall examines twenty-one cities at their greatest moments. Hall describes the achievements of these golden ages and outlines the precise combinations of forces -- both universal and local -- that led to each city's belle epoque.

Hall identifies four distinct expressions of civic innovation: artistic growth, technological progress, the marriage of culture and technology, and solutions to evolving problems. Descriptions of Periclean Athens, Renaissance Florence, Elizabethan London, and nineteenth-century Vienna bring to life those seedbeds of artistic and intellectual creativity. Explorations of Manchester during the Industrial Revolution, of Henry Ford's Detroit, and of Palo Alto at the dawn of the computer age highlight centers of technological advances. Tales of the creation of Los Angeles' movie industry and the birth of the blues and rock 'n' roll in Memphis depict the marriage of culture and technology.

Finally, Hall celebrates cities that have been forced to solve problems created by their very size. With Imperial Rome came the apartment block and aqueduct; nineteenth-century London introduced policing, prisons, and sewers; twentieth-century New York developed the skyscraper; and Los Angeles became the first city without a center, a city ruled instead by the car. And in a fascinating conclusion, Hall speculates on urban creativity in the twenty-first century.

This penetrating study reveals not only the lives of cities but also the lives of the people who built them and created the civilizations within them. A decade in the making, Cities in Civilization is the definitive account of the culture of cities.

Amazon.com Review
Every golden age has been an urban age; throughout history, cities have provided a crucible for creativity. How do such belles poquescome about? Why should the creative flame burn so uniquely in cities and not in the countryside, and why does the creative and innovative spirit of one city inevitably yield to another? Cities in Civilization explores these issues and others related to the central role of cities, past and present, in the fostering of artistic, philosophical, scientific, and technological genius.

Peter Hall devoted 15 years of his life conceptualizing, researching, and writing Cities in Civilization. His extraordinary efforts are apparent in the analytical scope, historical depth, and sheer length of the book, which, including photographs and a bibliography, is well over 1,000 pages. Supporting his argument with ample reference to dates, historical figures, and citations of leading urban scholars, the book does not lend itself to casual, cover-to-cover reading. Despite the book's length, though, it remains easy to navigate through the case studies of individual cities. Hall systematically divides the text into five thematic chapters, further subdividing each chapter chronologically by city. The chapters explore themes of cultural creativity, technological and economic innovation, the urban fusion of art and technology, urban innovation, and the partnership of the private and public sector to promote urban development and regeneration.

Breaking from other leading scholars in the field, Hall does not consider the great city doomed. Instead, Cities in Civilization testifies to his confidence that cities of the 21st century, like the great cities of the past, will successfully work to solve their own problems and ameliorate their own ills. --Bertina Loeffler

From Publishers Weekly
What brings a city to its golden age? Hall (Cities of Tomorrow)?a distinguished professor of urban planning?applies this question to cities ranging from Rome and Athens to Glasgow, Memphis and Palo Alto in his new survey. His conclusions, like the book itself, are diffuse. Examining cultural belle epoques, Hall contends that it was, ironically, the restrictiveness of the official artistic culture in turn-of-the-century Paris and Vienna that fueled startling innovations, as new artists were forced outside the mainstream. Looking at technology, Hall argues that an unfettered market is a great stimulant to invention?as in the heydays of Glasgow's shipbuilding trade and Manchester's cotton textile manufacturing?but, as both cases show, it also leaves cities vulnerable to the losses that result from other cities improving on their initial innovations. Turning to the fusion of cultural and industrial innovation?using L.A.'s film industry and Memphis's pop music scene as examples?Hall asserts that the success of both rests on recognizing a "society in flux" and catering to "the deepest emotional needs" of an important, untapped market. Hall next examines the great successes?and boondoggles?of urban planning over the last two centuries (as well as in imperial Rome) before ending with a coda in which he applies his accumulated insights to the future cities. Hall's broadmindedness allows him to draw useful insights from thinkers as diverse as Joseph Schumpeter and Michel Foucault. While it may not come as a great surprise that neither entirely unregulated markets nor rigid central planning, but a little of each?with a pinch of kismet?will bring a metropolis to its peak, Hall must be commended for making this case with unusual thoroughness.

From Library Journal
Like Braudel's and Holmes's, Hall's thesis here is that "the biggest and most cosmopolitan cities...have throughout history been the places that ignited the sacred flame of the human intelligence and the human imagination." Case studies illustrate themes such as the city as cultural crucible, the milieu for innovation, etc. Other recent larger studies of historically important cities include Robert Hughes's Barcelona (LJ 10/1/91) and Roy Porter's London: A Social History (Harvard Univ., 1995). (LJ 12/98).

The Jacques Barzun of the city
By Amazon Customer
This book reminds me very much of Jacques Barzun's FROM DAWN TO DECADENCE both in size and scope. Barzun looked at 500 years of Western cultural life and Sir Peter Hall has much the same interests, although he goes back some 2500 years and is more narrowly focused on urban culture. The title CITIES IN CIVILIZATION could be the other way around as Hall is interested in the Golden Ages that seem to have been a feature of all the great cities in history. "The Renaissance" he says "was an urban phenomenon; so was every great burst of creativity in human history." Hall then is seeking the civilization in cities.
Two other books that this one could be (should be, has been) compared with are THE CULTURE OF CITIES and THE CITY IN HISTORY, both by Lewis Mumford. Hall knows this and quickly dispatches the comparisons. "I do not at all share the Mumfordian view that the great city is doomed." Fair enough but his work remains valuable to urban historians and Hall's comment that "Mumford was fundamentally a brilliant polemical journalist, not a scholar" is uncalled for and irrelevant. I'm glad Hall got his academic tetchiness out of the way early and didn't bring it up again, because being subjected to such jibes and digs over the course of the 1000 pages of this book would have been unpleasant. And Hall doesn't need to resort to that anyway.
This book is a detailed, well researched exploration of the unique nature of the city as "a crucible of creativity". The first section of the book looks at artistic creativity - the most recognizable type of Golden Age and most closely associated with the foundation cities of Western civilization - Athens, Vienna, Florence, Paris, London and Berlin. Other themes are innovation and its technological and economic manifestation in urban settings. Here we visit Manchester, Glasgow, Detroit, San Francisco (more accurately Palo Alto and "Silicon Valley") and Tokyo. Hall then looks at two cities - Memphis and Los Angeles that he says offer a mix of artistic, technological, and economic exuberance. He is referring to the music and film industries. In his final section he acknowledges the emergence of regional urban areas and global cities and while recognizing the challenges they pose, he is not daunted and remains optimistic about the future of urban life. His coming Golden Age of a new urban order faces three challenges. That of transport technology and sustainable urbanism, an unequal urban world (the megacities of the Third World) and the threats to economic, family, and civic life.
If persons with interest in any aspect of urbanism don't find some mention of their pet subject in this vast sweep of urban life over the last two millennia, it's simply because they haven't waded through. And that's the only caveat about Hall's work. In the best traditions of old English learning this book is dense and it's not written in the snappiest of prose either. Cities are a testament to the slow processes of humanity. You'll have to rely on one of those tendencies - patience - when working your way through this book. In the end it's well worth it.

A superb analysis of how cities induce innovation
By A Customer
Do not be put off by a conventional title. Under the appearance of academic urban history this is an account of the urban sources of cultural creativity and technological innovation throughout history, from Athens to Florence, to London, to New York, to Paris, to Los Angeles, to Silicon Valley, and beyond. It deals with art, culture, music, technology, business, power, dreams and nightmares. Wonderfully written by one of the most distinguished urbanists in the world, this book delights, informs, and explains why certain people in certain places create, prosper and enjoy life, and others don't. The best book on cities in many years. Manuel Castells, Berkeley, California

A Masterful Historical Study of Majestic Sweep
By A Customer
Peter Hall's book "Cities in Civilization" is a masterful work with majestic sweep. Although not meant for everyone, this book provides insights into history and culture like no other. Hall looks at the golden ages of cities to illuminate their influence on great cultural achievements as well as economic and technological development, and then draws comparisons to discern what it was about these places that enabled them, of all cities, to become what they became at a particular time in history. The creative bursts of classical Athens, Renaissance Florence, and Shakespearean London are thoroughly discussed and utterly fascinating. The music of Vienna and the artistic creativity of late 19th and early 20th century Paris are literal courses on Western culture. The decadence and creative explosion of Weimar Germany is thoroughly explored before Hall turns his attention to industrialization and technology.
Hall is especially good, in the midst of his analysis, at discussing various theories of social change from Marx to Schumpeter, and Weber to Harold Innis. He details the reasons for industrial and technological growth and invention in 18th century Manchester, 19th century Glasgow, and 19th and 20th century Berlin. His discussion of Detroit and Henry Ford is particularly interesting. Silicon Valley and Tokyo are also discussed, and never does Hall loses sight of how their creativity permanently affected human civilization.
His section on "The Marriage of Art and Technology" is fundamental to an understanding of mass culture in the 20th and 21st centuries. Hollywood and "The Delta" region around Memphis are discussed for their impact on movies and popular music. These two sections are utterly fascinating. And his lengthy last section, which some readers may find the least interesting, deals with how many of the world's great cities have adapted to deal with increasing size and changing needs. Here Hall profiles the changes in the cities themselves, as well as changes in the cultural and social environment, of ancient Rome, and modern London, Paris, New York, Los Angelas, and Stockholm. The social experimentation in equality and how it affected housing in Sweden is particularly interesting.
All in all, if you have the stamina to read 1,000 pages you will be served a wonderful course on the development of Western culture and material civilization, as well as gain a fuller appreciation for the role of the great city in history. We are all in Sir Peter's debt for his years of study and the preparation of this book. His erudition and immense learning are greatly appreciated.

Hopalong Cassidy - An American Legend, by Grace Bradley Boyd, Michael Cochran

  • This book is many books in one. Most of all, it is a love story that reads like a fairy tale. A twelve-year-old girl goes to the movies in Brooklyn with her mother in 1926. The girl sees a larger-than-life image on the screen of actor William Boyd, and she falls madly in love. She writes his name in her school books. She starts collecting articles about him movie magazines. She fantasizes that someday she will marry him. The girl is Grace Bradley.
  • In 1931, a talent scout from Paramount Pictures sees Grace dancing in a New York cabaret and offers her a screen test. She is immediately signed to a contract with Paramount and moves to Hollywood with her mother. She still thinks of William Boyd, but makes no attempt to contact him after she is living in Hollywood.
  • In 1937, her phone rings and the voice on the other end says, "This is William Boyd. May I speak to Grace Bradley?" Grace is shocked and thinks someone is playing a joke on her until she hears the famous Bill Boyd laugh, then she knows it is the real thing. Three weeks later to the day, they are married.

Co-written by Grace Bradley Boyd (Mrs. Hoppy) and richly illustrated with photographs and posters, this offers a first hand account of their amazing love story and the original man in black who brought the qualities of honesty, courage and justice from the silver screen into our homes --- Preface by Bill Clinton, a Hoppy fan with the outfit to prove it!

Like all heroic tales, the story is an intertwining of many lives, including Grace Bradley, a 12 year-old girl who fell in love with a charismatic silent film star and ten years later fulfilled her childhood vow to marry him, and William Boyd, a fading actor inspired by love and gratitude to dedicate his life to the character that became a beacon to the world --- Narrated in the clear, strong voice of Grace Bradley Boyd, and told with the wisdom and perspective of her 94 years, the saga unfolds with enough interconnecting stories to spoke a wagon wheel, a rich tapestry of lives, places and events interwoven by fate over the span of a century --- As the definitive account of a uniquely American icon, the richly illustrated 368 page book is an absolute must read for all aficionados of the Western genre and Hopalong Cassidy fans in particular.

You must put it down
By Gene P
Extremely well written and interesting to read. I'd say "you can't put it down", but it's so heavy you have to put it down to read it. It's a terrific biography as well as filmography, and includes many collectables and photos of Hoppy wanna-bes. Interesting business insights too! Grace Boyd's life is more intriguing than most romance novels. Hoppy as a role model is unsurpassed. Russ Cochran and Steve Geppi did a great job putting this package together.

Here he comes........
By William W. Miller
If your a fan or have any interst in this iconic figure, it's a great book. Super pictures of Bill Boyd and Topper, insight into the films and film making process, and some understanding of the relationship the actor had with his wife, Grace. Plenty of movie memorabilia, and discourse about the 40/50's Hoppy craze that swept the nation as a result of his film popularity and self positioning as a TV pioneer. Yes, before there was Davy Crocket and coonskin caps, there was Hopalong Cassidy and kids running around in black Hoppy outfits. Great effort about someone greatly beloved in his day. Kids of today are disadvantaged in not having screen role models like Hoppy to be entertained by and look up to. Much like Clayton Moore with the character of the Lone Ranger, Bill Boyd became Hopalong Cassidy, and was proud of it. Sixty six films and two seasons of TV episodes, Hoppy was the man in black.

"Containing 375 references, this book works best as an encyclopedia for researchers working in this topic. But it can also be effectively used by students who are interested in the combinatorics of set partitions and want to get a hand on researching them. … a very useful reference for researchers of the enumerative side of set partitions."
―Acta Sci. Math. (Szeged), 80, 2014

"… a comprehensive account of the history and current research in the combinatorics of pattern enumeration and pattern avoidance in set partitions. … While it is aimed primarily at advanced undergraduate and graduate students in discrete mathematics with a focus on set partitions, its extensive bibliography, with 375 entries, and the variety of constructions and approaches used in the text make it a valuable reference for researchers in this field."
―Ricardo Mamede, Zentralblatt MATH 1261

"… a comprehensive account of recent and current research on the pattern-related aspects of set partitions."
―David Callan, Mathematical Reviews, April 2013

Defective Kindle Edition (review of Kindle only)

This review pertains ONLY to the kindle edition. This is cheap but very defective! NO ILLUSTRATIONS. The notes are not linked from the text, and in the Notes section, the numbers are omitted. So figuring out which note goes with which part of the text is your challenge.

A fun, timeless must read adventure
By charity marchandt
I love art history books but am aware that many have better use, curing insomnia. Although this book was more and two hundred pages, it was a wonderful, well researched, attention grabbing narrative about the history of color, the difference between pigment and dye , the search for "forgotten" recipes and human sentiment around the globe to color. Even the epilogue and bibliography are useful and easy to follow.

Evolution, by Nicholas H. Barton, Derek E. G. Briggs, Jonathan A. Eisen, David B. Goldstein, Nipam H. Patel

Evolution is a new book on evolutionary biology that elegantly synthesizes traditional evolutionary theories with contemporary concepts from genomics, developmental biology, human genetics, and other areas of molecular biology. As an innovative, interdisciplinary, and thoroughly integrated book on evolutionary biology with world-renowned author, Evolution thoroughly illuminates this major paradigm of modern science. Evolutionary principles are introduced with examples from across the spectrum of life - from ''jumping genes'' to RNA molecules, to populations of yeast and E. coli reared in the laboratory, to dung flies, lizards, and deer in their natural habitats. A section is also devoted to human evolution and diversity, merging recent insights from molecular techniques with paleontological evidence. Evolution is recommended as a primary textbook for undergraduate courses in evolution as well as for biologists seeking a clear, current, and comprehensive account of evolutionary theory and mechansms.

Review
''This new [textbook in evolutionary biology] by Barton and colleagues is among the best. The production quality is superb in layout, composition, typesetting, colour palette, illustrations and gorgeous half-tones; and the writing is excellent, as one might expect from such a stellar cast of experts in population genetics, palaeontology, human genetics, bacterial genomics and developmental biology (respectively).'' --Daniel Hartl, Harvard University (Nature)

''The book has many strengths. The prose is crisp and explanations are rigorous but clear. The authors do not hesitate to discuss complex ideas or to provide appropriate caveats about the certainty of our knowledge. The Figures are useful and abundant...The expertise of the authors in quantitative, population, and developmental genetics is obvious; explanations are often less formal than in other texts, but at the same time are more sophisticated and more intuitive. The chapters on diversity include a detailed but engaging introduction to the genetics and genomics of bacterial and archaeal diversity, the origins of multicellularity, and the evolution of novelty inferred from both fossil data and from developmental biology. Although I had assured myself that I would not read the text word-for-word, I found myself deeply immersed in many chapters and read them from beginning to end. The material was not new (for me), but the descriptions and explanations seemed fresher and more compelling than in other current evolution texts. The explicit focus on questions at the molecular level determines the use of examples throughout the text, but these examples come from basic biology, not biomedical science. This book will be particularly attractive to molecular biologists who want to learn the details of evolutionary pattern and process. It may also be the book of choice for evolutionary biology graduate students with interests in population genetics, ''evo-devo,'' and molecular evolution.'' --Richard G. Harrison, Cornell University, Ithaca (Evolution)

''At 833 pages, Evolution by Barton et al. is a large book, and it is copiously and helpfully illustrated with photos, figures and line drawings, mostly in color. The lion's share consists of Part II, ''The Origin and Diversification of Life,'' and Part III, ''Evolutionary Processes.'' The three chapters of Part I introduce the history of evolutionary biology, including molecular biology, and the evidence for evolution. The final two chapters, in Part IV, provide an excellent, up-to-date summary of human evolution. The discussion of the Out-of-Africa and multiregional hypotheses of the origin of modern humans is nuanced rather than dogmatic. A section on ''Genomics and Humanness'' is brief but incisive. The final chapter on ''Current Issues in Human Evolution'' is exemplary and can be profitably read by medical geneticists seeking to establish associations between genes and diseases.

The expertise of Barton et al. in population and evolutionary genetics is eminently displayed in Part III, which makes up somewhat more than half of Evolution. All the bases are covered, and well covered at that: mutation and variation, population structure, random drift and gene flow, selection, social evolution, speciation, and much more...The last two chapters of Part III, ''Evolution of Genetic Systems'' and ''Evolution of Novelty,'' are priceless. In length, depth and excitement, these two chapters go far beyond what is typically covered in evolution textbooks. The increasingly relevant topic of the evolution of evolvability is helpfully included, and evo devo considerations are again brought to bear in these chapters.'' --Francisco J. Ayala, University of California, Irvine (Nature Genetics)

Intellectual, stimulating, fascinating, revealing; a must have for those who must know what Life really is.
By Amit B. Singh
I'm not a Molecular Biologist or an Evolutionary Scientist by profession. So I think my friend who loaned me this book was a bit surprised when I asked if I can borrow the book from her. It is after all a text book for students in extremely specialized field(s). The thing about this book is that you don't have to be in a specialized field to be reading it. It is for anyone who has ever wondered about life on earth, how it evolved, time scales involved in the evolutionary journey, various stages of evolution, different mechanisms life has employed to adapt, etc. etc. It is a fascinating work built upon the original idea proposed by Charles Darwin himself in "On the origin of species", with theories that have since been proven to be facts, and more in depth knowledge about the subject than any other book of its kind out there. This book will literally take you through the tree of life, with wonderful illustrations, and have you thinking about Life like you've never thought before. This book will make you feel connected to the Universe and every life form that has ever existed on the Earth and you can't help but feel both immortal yet insignificant. The particles in your body have been around for an eternity, and will be around long after you're gone. You're part of the Universe and the Universe is a part of you. I'm very fortunate to have had the chance to read this book. It is now part of my collection of books and I highly recommend it to all the curious minds out there.

Decent and extensive, but often vague
By puetz
This is a decent textbook of high print quality, usually good and professional graphics and modern layout. There is no doubt that a student can learn a lot.

Unfortunately, I do have a couple of issues with this book. I am a biologist and have read 17 out of the 26 chapters (about 2/3). In summary, the book is too long because it is often vague and sometimes fairly technical. Occasionally I had trouble understanding the material because of poorly selected figures or examples. Here are some examples:

The introductory 3 chapters already have some serious shortcomings. For example, the section on "Objections to Evolution" (p. 76) is pretty lame. The argument that evolution cannot be observed is only vaguely addressed. Of course it can be observed, given that we can observe mutations either accumulate from generation to generation or that we can simply generate such mutations at will. We can also observe selection of such mutations in the lab etc. Similarly, the argument that evolutionary theory is not testable is rebutted by the "consistency of phylogenies" and the fossil record. Sigh. Is that all the authors could come up with?

In the same vain, I find many sections vague, with suboptimal examples. For instance, the chapter on evolutionary novelty doesn't really present any novelties but rather "standard evolution". We have known of a number of newly (or recently) evolved genes, novel enzyme activities, or novel morphological structures. There is barely any mention of those. Instead the chapter describes "Mllerian mimicry", how mutations in phosphoglucose-isomerase causes temperature-sensitive differences in kinetics or how opsin can change its light absorption properties by mutations. Hardly any novelty that will convince a creationist. It is true that there are not many true novelties that we understand well but there are certainly better examples than those in the book, e.g. radical changes in protein activity with very few mutations (think yeast Gal1 and Gal3 proteins) or morphological inventions such as feathers from reptile scales. Instead, Barton and colleagues use rather obscure examples and then don't even explain them well.

In fact, the vagueness is my main complaint. There are dozens of cases where the authors talk, for instance, about "baceria that grow on carbon monoxide" (p. 719) but don't say which ones. A page earlier they have a figure illustrating non-homologous gene displacement, using a hypothetical "green gene" displaced by an "orange gene". I am inclined to scream "Lord! Just give me a real example, please!" and there are many, especially in microbial metabolism. Often I got the impression that the authors were too lazy to look up better examples (or ANY example) and this is what makes evolution so interesting and convincing.

Finally, the book is often too complicated because of the many attempts to recapitulate the scientific literature without distilling out the gist of it. Chapter 11 is a case in point. It would have helped to edit some figures by simply adding labels instead of just reprint them from a scientific paper (see Fig. 11.16 which is incomprehensible without reading the legend). Many sections thus could easily be shortened significantly without losing much information.

I often have discussions with a creationist friend, but I am reluctant to recommend this book to him. It may backfire...

Sadly, not a very good book
By Yegor Voronin
At first glance, the book is fantastic. Only when you start reading it, you discover that it is too unwieldy and tries to accomplish too much. Authors decided not to choose any particular knowledge level for their audience, but instead cover a lot of ground very quickly. The learning curve in this book is extremely steep! This is a book that will take you from description of molecular nature of DNA all the way to such complex concepts as average fitness excess and beyond. Unfortunately, this means that explanations are brief and many things are given as a fact of the matter, without proper explanations of their origins and/or importance. It also means that if you are like me, a scientist with quite a decent knowledge of biology and evolution, then for 80% of this book you will be bored, for 10% you will have no clue what the authors are talking about, and only 10% will be of any reasonable interest to you. In the end, the book is just not fun to read. Very disappointing...
