ARABIAN MARRIAGE
By Ibrahim A. Almumayiz
KINSHIP AND MARRIAGE IN EARLY ARABIA is an important source book which ,although published as far back as 1913 is still referred to in modern studies on this subject for its careful and exhaustive scholarship. Its importance lies not only in its systematic documentation of marriage patterns in Pre-Islamic Arabia, but perhaps more significantly, in tracing which marriage practices have survived in Islam, and which have been banned by it. For instance, Islam has banned Polyandry - a wife having more than one husband - which was precticed in Pre-Islamic times. Islam also banned marriage by "Mut'aa" - pleasure- wherby a man can marry for just a short period - a day and night, a few days , a week, etc.. which Islam condemned as a form of prostitution although "mut'aa" marriage still survives in parts of the Shi'ite world, notably in Iran. But Islam has also retained several Pre-Islamic marriage practices, such as procedures for asking for a woman's hand in marriage - "khutba", and the protocols associated with it such as what is said when the prospective husband's family approaches that of the woman who is asked for in marriage. Also, the pre-Islamic practice of the woman having a say in accepting or rejecting a suitor is also practiced in Islam, although there are cases in the most backward Muslim societies wherby a woman is forced to accept the husband her family chooses for her. Pre-Islamic divorce practises have also largely been retained by Islam. All these issues, and very many more which lack of space prevents from mentioning are dealt with in detail in this scholarly work.

Too Many to Jail: The Story of Iran's New Christians, by Mark Bradley

Documents the remarkable rise of the Iranian church, despite fierce persecution, as Iranians grow disillusioned with Islam

In 1979, there were fewer than 500 known Christians from a Muslim background in Iran. Today there are at least 100,000 new believers. Church leaders believe that millions can be added to the church in the next few years--such is the spiritual hunger that exists. The religious violence that accompanied the reign of President Ahmadinejad drained its perpetrators of political and religious legitimacy, and has opened the door to other faiths.

This book sets the rapid church growth in Iran in the context of the deteriorating relationship between Iranians and their national religion. There is a major focus on the Ahmadinejad years, but the author also covers the history of the church before 1979, developing the central idea that the spark may have become buried in the ashes but has never been extinguished.

Careful, proportionate, well-informed, and accurate, Too Many to Jail is a powerful reminder of the Christian revival that the headlines ignore. The stories of faith, persecution, and encouragement will inspire every reader to see anew God’s work in the world.

Review
“When I want to understand what is happening behind the opaque walls surrounding modern-day Iran, I always turn to Mark Bradley. Mark’s lucid writing and extraordinary research provide the reader with an unforgettable experience of seeing what God is doing and how He is at work giving birth to His kingdom today inside the Islamic Republic of Iran. I highly recommend to any follower of Jesus Christ, Mark's latest book: Too Many to Jail.” (David Garrison, author of A Wind in the House of Islam 2014-12-01)

“Credibly documents what appears in Iran to be the greatest response to Christ among Muslims ever known in history! From an analysis of recent political history, and the efficacy of house churches, one can now understand why so many Iranians have bowed their knee to the Lord Jesus Christ.” (Greg Livingsone 2014-12-01)

“We have worked with Elam for many years. We feel privileged to have personal connection with some of those whose stories you tell, and count them our friends. It is a privilege to endorse this book.” (Jill And Stuart Briscoe 2014-12-01)

“A precise, honest and informative account of ordeals of a growing (Muslim-background) Christian population inside Iran. This affirming message of perseverance, hope and faith will excite and challenge the reader... a must read.” (Mike Ansani, Director of Operations, Mohabat TV 2014-12-01)

“Without exception history proves that persecution always provides fertile soil for the growth of His church through the Gospel. Read and see this truth delineated in the story of Iran.” (Johnny Hunt, Former President, Southern Baptist Convention 2014-12-01)

“This is a compelling, inspirational and hopeful book. Once I started reading I could not put it down. Mark Bradley skilfully and accurately leads us through the story of the church in Iran today. This book is an act of great service to those who want to know what has happened and is happening with the church in Iran. Through reading Too Many to Jail my admiration and appreciation for the church in Iran – and Iranians - has grown along with an understanding of the circumstances in which such remarkable growth is taking place. If you are tempted to believe that God does anything the same way twice read this book and let this Iranian story teach you. If you are tempted to believe there is anything more beautiful on the planet than the church of Jesus Christ read this book and let God speak to you through the Iranian church in the middle of its weakness, empowering and glory.” (Viv Thomas, Assoc International Director, OM International 2014-12-01)

“Too Many To Jail is a story of “lovely pain”: a story of unfailing and costly love not only about Iranian converts and house churches, but also about the manifestation of Christ in Iranian society and cultures. On one hand it describes pain, struggles and challenges; on the other it tells of hope, growth and courage.” (Sara Afshari 2014-12-01)

“As the son of Iranian martyr, Haik Hovsepian Mehr, I can relate to many instances in this book. I admire Mark Bradley, who has so carefully researched and presented the facts about the persecuted believers in Iran. He gives a 360 degree view of the fastest growing church in the world, in the face of political and governmental oppression. Too Many to Jail is not merely an informative read that helps us stand with Iranians in prayer, but it inspires us by their stories to grow in our walk with the Lord.” (Joseph Hovsepian Mehr, Founder of Hosvepian Ministries 2014-12-01)

Exciting and Informative!
By Jimmy R. Reagan
Does it excite you to read of God’s mighty work going on in the most unlikely of places? Does reading of revival in places of intense persecution move you? You will, then, love this new volume by Mark Bradley, and published by Monarch Books, that tells the story of Iran’s new Christians.

The author holds to the theory that God often does His greatest work where persecution is strong. I fully agree. Iran would have made my top 5 hardest countries for Christian work based on my superficial understanding of that country.

Forces at work there are far beyond what I realized. The author explains quite well how Islam and its radical ways has turned many Iranians against it. The so called Revolution has hurt the people there in so many ways. Then the presidency of Ahmadinejad deeply hurt that nation financially, as well as corruption and abuse in the name of Islam only made it worse.

He shows how they in their pain are attracted to Jesus Christ. Many are turning to Christ fully realizing how great a price they may pay. In fact, many have paid it. Amazing, Christianity just keeps going.

The last part of the book shows how house churches are what is working there. There is no way visible churches could work in the current environment, but despite the authorities’ best efforts, house churches are thriving.

There are a few unusual aspects of the revival in places as one element of it seems to come from charismatics. The author seems to approve, but it is very little mentioned. Most great revivals I have ever read of seemed to be a little loose on the margins. Still, this is a fine volume.

I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Mark Bradley has done a great service writing Too Many to Jail
By Heather
Mark Bradley has done a great service writing Too Many to Jail. It has brought to light what Christianity in a hostile country really looks like. I thought this would be an interesting read to get an idea how Christianity might be starting to eek into Iran. Instead, my eyes were opened to many ways God has been moving for so many more years than I realized. Bradley begins with a thorough background to understand the setting for the average person in Iran. Then he brings it around to what it looks like for a Christian and why someone might possibly turn to Jesus in a country like Iran. Quite honestly, it’s an eye opening book for someone that has a Western view.

Bradley takes us through what a house church looks like in Iran with 5 diverse samples. We get to see a variety of people and settings, but seeking the same savior, Jesus. This book finishes with even more history and details about how Christianity has transformed a nation turned against it. This book is a motivator for my own faith and walk realizing how easy I have it. There is an overwhelming excitement to see how the light can shine so bright in a very dark country.

I am thankful to have found this book courtesy of The Book Club Network. They bring out authors and titles I would not have found any other way. I have been provided this book for an honest review.

Not exactly what I expected but informative
By seasons of grace
When I read the title of this book I thought that it was going to be a book about Christians who were being persecuted for their faith in Iran. Sort of like some I have read in the past that gave stories of individuals who had been persecuted, jailed, or martyred. It was nothing like that. This book is more of a historical account of "why" there are so many Muslims converting to Christianity. It involves alot of political people and the ideas they had, as well as Iranian traditions, and how all of that has turned many Iranian people away from the Muslim religion to Christianity.

There is a lot of facts and details, and charts about the government, politics, leaders, and the church and the rise of Christianity. One of the interesting things I learned in this book is one of the reasons why many Muslims are so against Christianity. Theirs is a religion of many rules and traditions. Women are to cover themselves. But the so called Christian nations seems to live "free" of all these rules, some in blatant defiance to such things actually participating in many things the Bible even calls sin. Some of these "Christian" nations have even cause much bloodshed in the Muslim nations or nations with a minority. Even Germany.... was to them considered a Christian nation and they were involved in the Holocaust. Even though many Americans are not necessarily Christians - we are considered to be a "Christian" nation.

The GOOD news is that when they see true Christianity is about Jesus and what He has to offer, many are coming to Christ. Those in Iran who are being saved are willing to give their lives for him. The book includes accounts of home churches and people who have been willing to suffer and sacrifice for the cause of Christ. It is awesome to see how God is working in the lives of those people and we should be compelled to pray for them diligently.

Although, this book is interesting, it may not be for all. It contains alot of detail which may be of interest to some but I myself had a little bit of a tough time with all the charts, facts, and figures. That is just not really my style. That said, don't rule out the importance of the information in this book. Our brothers and sisters in Christ need us to know what is happening behind the scenes in their country and pray for them.

I received this book from the publisher and The Book Club Network in exchange for my honest review.

sexy bullrider + strong woman + pregnancy = great mix
By SoCalGal5
Her Bull Rider’s Baby is a fun, sexy, and moving romance. It delves into the two lives of Liliana and Adriano. Liliana comes from a long line of ranchers in Southern California. Her family has built an empire that includes bulls. Liliana is in charge of that program and has started it from scratch. Adriano is a bull rider from Brazil. He has come to compete in the US to win and earn as much as he can and return to Brazil. When Liliana and Adriano meet, intense sexual sparks were immediate.

Liliana had my heart from the beginning. She goes after what she wants. She does not apologize for past relationships. She does not put limits on her abilities. She is fiercely loyal to her family and likes herself. I have read many books lately where the heroine’s do not seem to like themselves. So it is refreshing to read a heroine who is comfortable with whom she is and likes who she is. However, Liliana is not without faults as well. She can be incredibly stubborn and let’s her fear of emotional intimacy dictate some of her actions.

I really liked the evolution and changes of Adriano. He starts off as just an incredible male physical specimen (which he is, don’t get me wrong!). At the beginning of the pregnancy, Adriano is closed off and very myopic. It was at this point that is was difficult to for me to see him as the hero. Once the story got involved in his back-story and when he finally opens up, he becomes a truly fully developed hero. I love his loyalty to his family, to Brazil, and to his child. Also, he is a great dancer! Yeah!

Though I had some issue with how Liliana and Adriano were trying to split the custody of their child, I liked how all the ups and downs of their relationship let them get to know each other and how they worked together. They both had weaknesses and strengths. They had to learn to compromise, which was hard with two incredibly stubborn individuals. The writing was extremely fluid and descriptive. The story had funny moments, fantastic sexy times, some profound sadness, and great joy. Once again, the Las Morenas series keeps me intrigued and wanting more (**cough** Josh’s story **cough**).

Loved It!!
By Sara A
I received this book as an ARC.

I could not put down this fantastic read! It has a story that will grab you and keep you interested and entertained all the way from the beginning to the very end. You will fall in love with Liliana and Adriano! This book is a must read, there is no doubt about it and once you do, you will be hooked and will have to read everything else by this Genevieve Turner if you already haven’t started reading her books.

Liliana Merrill loved setting up her bull-breeding operation and also loved being a little wild. The last thing she expected was to have a wild good time with sexy bull rider Adriano Silva and wind up with a bun in the oven.

Adriano Silva an up-and coming bull rider all he wants to do is help his family by saving up and being the best bull rider. What he wasn’t expecting was to hear from the one woman who tempted him to forget his plan and fall hard. When he got the news he was going to be a father he was on the next plane to see her. He wasn’t going to not be there for his child since he never truly knew his father. Will the two butt heads on everything or learn to compromise and fall in love not lust with each other?

Solid story

3.5 stars

This is a fast paced no nonsense book. The beginning scene is a positive pregnancy test. There are no secret baby or long separations that tend to happen in unplanned pregnancy storylines. Lil told Adriano as soon as she found out. He didn't hesitate to step up. The two them had different ideas about custody but decided they could work it out. They were both very strong willed characters and it made for some fun dialogue and scenes. Adriano is alpha, a little chauvinistic and possessive. Lil is strong is independent and used to doing things her way.

Six Walks in the Fictional Woods, by Umberto Eco

In Six Walks in the Fictional Woods Umberto Eco shares with us his Secret Life as a reader―his love for MAD magazine, for Scarlett O'Hara, for the nineteenth-century French novelist Nerval's Sylvie, for Little Red Riding Hood, Agatha Christie, Agent 007 and all his ladies. We see, hear, and feel Umberto Eco, the passionate reader who has gotten lost over and over again in the woods, loved it, and come back to tell the tale, The Tale of Tales. Eco tells us how fiction works, and he also tells us why we love fiction so much. This is no deconstructionist ripping the veil off the Wizard of Oz to reveal his paltry tricks, but the Wizard of Art himself inviting us to join him up at his level, the Sorcerer inviting us to become his apprentice.

From Library Journal
Eco's six lectures in Harvard's prestigious "Charles Eliot Norton Lectures" invite readers to reexamine how they read and how much is expected of them. Eco argues that any actual reader is an empirical reader with a specific personal reading context. As such, each individual reader is only part of the model reader, the author's composite imagined listener. But the individual author, always distinct from the narrator, even a first-person narrator, is also only part of the model author whose stylistic strategies help all empirical readers infer what the characteristics of the model reader are and, circling back, what those of the model author are. Using entertaining anecdotes from serious and popular fiction (Dante, Poe, Nerval, Calvino), cinema, and journalism, Eco ( Misreadings , LJ 5/1/92) scales back the systematizing of his Seventies semiotics and makes reading a commonsense activity, both challenging and titillating. For comprehensive collections in literature.

Review
Erudite, wide-ranging, and slyly humorous...The literary examples Eco employs range from Dante to Dumas, from Sterne to Spillane. His text is thought-provoking, often outright funny, and full of surprising juxtapositions. (The Atlantic)

Reading [these chapters] is indeed like wandering in the woods...They might in fact be called, more prosaically, "How to Be a Good Reader," for Eco, in his incredibly manipulative way, has you eating out of his hand by the end of them. (Susan Salter Reynolds Los Angeles Times Book Review)

The dim boundary between the imaginary and the real is Eco's home terrain...He is a foxy gamesman, using enchanted woods as a flexible image for narrative texts, and mustering a playful array of allusions from The Three Musketeers to the Rocky Horror Picture Show. (Robert Taylor Boston Globe)

[This] dashing and stylish series of six lectures...displays Umberto Eco's enviable ability to transform arid semiotics and narrative theory into intellectual entertainment. (John O'Reilly Independent)

Frustrating There is a "there" there but it takes too much shovel work
By Phred
3.5 stars.
I bought this book in part because I am a fan of Umberto Eco, In part because of the reviews and because I like learning from writers what they think readers should know. I wanted to like this book. Mostly I am frustrated by it. I understand why others are impressed with it. Perhaps you will appreciate a contrasting opinion.

I cannot compare this work to Aristotle's Poetics as another review can, I will compare it to Vladimir Nabokov's Lectures on Literature. Both works are publications made from lecture material by two established writers and thinkers. Both sets of lectures are intended to inform readers on how to better go about the work of being a reader. Nabokov and Eco are very nearly contemporaries. However Nabokov is best known as a writer and latterly as an instructor of literature. Eco is primarily a semiotcian given to highly esoteric analysis and `only' latterly as an author of popular novels.

Both Eco's Six Walks in the Fictional Woods, and Nabokov's Lectures on literature require a reader ready to work. Ultimately Nabokov is interesting in teaching and assisting. Eco is interested in name dropping, intellectual clutter, being clever and occasionally insightful. There are very good points in both books. I can recommend them both. I have more reservations with and frustrations with Eco.

Eco begins with several points about types of readers and writers. Once he settles in he has presented two basic approaches to reading. There are empirical readers, who want a literal, factual recitation and who are given to anticipating where an author it going to take the story. Alternately there are model readers who are open to whatever the author has to say and will follow behind the narrative limiting themselves to imagining only what the writer presents. This concept is divided into a few more types of model readers and there is some discussion of model writers but mostly these sets of complexities disappear. The initial concept is lost in a discussion how many or few detail the writer should include. Fundamentally this is about 5 pages of material to make a one page point. Here I suggest that the more pro-active mind of the empirical reader is a tool that a good writer can use either to trick the reader or to speed the reading processes. Absent a model reader, a writer will need `sell' his every point and invention. That is distinguishing these two types of reader makes for a fine intellectual point, but makes little advance on becoming a more aware reader.

Eco next introduces a concept parallel to and equally interesting as one made by Nabokov. Lectures on Literature argues the need for a reader to fully comprehend the space- the literary geography created by the author. Nabokov makes maps exactly from the text in his example books; be it the room where Kafka's Gregor Samsa finds himself turned into a beetle or the grounds around Jane Austin's Mansfield Park. Eco would have you spend as much effort on exactly defining the flow of time in a work. There is a two page example of how this chronology would appear and again there is a typology for the several kinds of time that are involved in a narrative. For example the time it takes the reader to read a section and the flow of time detailed in the narrative.

The case for both approaches are equally valid, but re-reading books until you have both time and space mapped out sounds like a guaranteed method to take the pleasure out of reading. Teacher, is it ok if I am mindful of these details and finish with a book before reducing it to its mechanical parts? Do we now need to create a literary altimeter to help us determine the distance between Dante's Hell below the reader and a Tom Clancy satellite in space?

Eco will expend most of a lecture on a problem in the Three Musketeers based on the impossibility of d'Artagnen taking a walk in detailed in the book and during the 17th Century Paris of the book, and arriving on the Rue Sarvadoni. Eco's point is that readers need to have rational mental points of reference if they are to follow the imaginary details of the writer's fiction. It is of passing interest that Eco adopts Nabokov's technique of making a map, but Eco makes his from a real Paris, whereas Nabokov restricts himself to the reality of the writer. Nabokov simplifies his argument by saying that in fiction: reality is what the writer needs it to be. The closest Eco come to being this direct is when he reminds the reader of the implied contract between writer and reader, termed: `Willing suspension of disbelief'. What happens to Eco's case if Dumas simply made a cartographic error and no one thought to check a street map much less to edit the text?

Eco ends with a great question. Simplified, and this book needs to be simplified: If presented with a set of pages, that relate a story; how can a reader determine if the story is fictional or factual. Eco admits that hypothetically, the narrative can be so constructed that no such determination can be made.

An included discussion of how a person's mind uses a techniques to add new information, called stories, to old stories to build an understanding of reality and that this same techniques shapes a reader's ability to accept or reject a writer's reality, Eco makes the following statement:
"We accept a story that our ancestors have handed down to us as being true, even though today we call these ancestors scientists"
I hope that this statement means something else in Umberto Eco's native Italian. It carries no meaning to me. There are other examples of these kinds of strange statements.

Both Eco's and Nabakovs lectures are worth reading. They complement each other. Eco is frustrating. He is given to more abstruse and academic thinking. Six Walks in the Fictional Woods should have been better

more accessible than expected
By Douglas H. Haden
Six Walks is more accessible than I had expected (my copy is now heavily highlighted, marked up, and loaded with the little plastic stickies I use to flag ideas and references). Eco is speaking to readers and, thereby, equally to writers. The six Charles Elliot Norton lectures begin with the role time plays in fiction and end with the importance (to our perception of reality) of accuracy in writing fiction. This is weighty stuff made accessible by Eco's illustration by example: Yes, Dante, Shakespeare, and Kafka, but the writers who give us Hercule Poirot, Agent 007 and Little Red Riding Hood as well. If you read fiction or write fiction, the material will be useful and the book will please.

The best epidemiology methods book by world class experts
By R. Hoskins
This is an excellent epidemiology text whether for a beginner or someone already with an elementary background in the subject. For that matter, experts need to have this on their shelf. The prose is clear and easy reading with difficult concepts being presented clearly and succinctly. The authors are world class epidemiologists who know what they are talking about at the highest level who have walked their talk for decades and trained hundreds of epidemiologists that are practicing today. One can be confident that the discussions about the thorny topics, say, like confounding, effect modification, and interaction are the best available anywhere. Also the exercises are not the usual turn-the-crank types but engage the reader thoroughly with the result that one develops significant skills that will be useful when the reader starts research on their own. Answers are supplied. In my mind many epidemiology books are really poor biostatistics books in disguise. There is a lot more to epidemiology than running multivariate models and pouring over tables of odds ratios and looking at the confidence intervals. There is a practice of doing epidemiological studies that goes way beyond statistics and requires a special style of thinking and clarity of thought that this book teaches by example after example.

“Science writing as detective story at its best.” ―Jennifer Ouellette, Scientific American

A New York Times Notable Book of the Year, a Scientific American Best Book of the Year, and a Finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award.

Ebola, SARS, Hendra, AIDS, and countless other deadly viruses all have one thing in common: the bugs that transmit these diseases all originate in wild animals and pass to humans by a process called spillover. In this gripping account, David Quammen takes the reader along on this astonishing quest to learn how, where from, and why these diseases emerge and asks the terrifying question: What might the next big one be?

*Starred Review* Exemplary science writer Quammen schools us in the fascinating if alarming facts about zoonotic diseases, animal infections that sicken humans, such as rabies, Ebola, influenza, and West Nile. Zoonoses can escalate rapidly into global pandemics when human-to-human transmission occurs, and Quammen wants us to understand disease dynamics and exactly what’s at stake. Drawing on the truly dramatic history of virology, he profiles brave and stubborn viral sleuths and recounts his own hair-raising field adventures, including helping capture large fruit bats in Bangladesh. Along the way, Quammen explains how devilishly difficult it is to trace the origins of a zoonosis and explicates the hidden process by which pathogens spill over from their respective reservoir hosts (water fowl, mosquitoes, pigs, bats, monkeys) and infect humans. We contract Lyme disease after it’s spread by black-legged ticks and white-footed mice, not white-tailed deer as commonly believed. The SARS epidemic involves China’s wild flavor trend and the eating of civets. Quammen’s revelatory, far-reaching investigation into AIDS begins in 1908 with a bloody encounter between a hunter and a chimpanzee in Cameroon. Zoonotic diseases are now on the rise due to our increasing population, deforestation, fragmented ecosystems, and factory farming. Quammen spent six years on this vital, in-depth tour de force in the hope that knowledge will engender preparedness. An essential work. --Donna Seaman

Review
“That [Quammen] hasn’t won a nonfiction National Book Award or Pulitzer Prize is an embarrassment…Timely and terrifying. Mr. Quammen, a gifted science writer, combines physical and intellectual adventure. He also adds a powerful measure of moral witness: ecological destruction is greatly to blame for our current peril.” (Dwight Garner - The New York Times)

“David Quammen [is] one of that rare breed of science journalists who blend exploration with a talent for synthesis and storytelling.” (Nathan Wolfe - Nature)

“Riveting, terrifying, and inspiring.” (Georges Simenon - Wired)

“David Quammen might be my favorite living science writer: amiable, erudite, understated, incredibly funny, profoundly humane. The best of his books, The Song of the Dodo, renders the relatively arcane field of island biogeography as gripping as a thriller. That bodes well for his new book, whose subject really is thriller-worthy: how deadly diseases (AIDS, SARS, Ebola) make the leap from animals to humans, and how, where, and when the next pandemic might emerge.” (Kathryn Schulz - New York Magazine)

“[Spillover is] David Quammen’s absorbing, lively and, yes, occasionally gory trek through the animal origins of emerging human diseases.” (Cleveland Plain Dealer)

“As page turning as Richard Preston’s The Hot Zone…[Quammen is] one of the best science writers.” (Seattle Times)

“[Spillover] delivers news from the front lines of public health. It makes clear that animal diseases are inseparable from us because we are inseparable from the natural world.” (Philadelphia Tribune)

“Starred review. ...a frightening but critically important book for anyone interested in learning about the prospects of the world’s next major pandemic.” (Publishers Weekly)

“Starred review. A wonderful, eye-opening account of humans versus disease.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“Starred review. An essential work.” (Booklist)

Gripping stories with good science
By Rachael Ludwick
The jargon of diseases can be boring, tedious. There are a lot of acronyms and big words. Worse, we often don't know as much as we'd like -- and usually we aren't very certain of what we do know. Telling a good story given those constraints is hard. But Spillover repeatedly provides gripping stories that still impart a good understanding of what we know about zoonotic (animal-origin) diseases. Even better, the author ties disparate stories together to describe some general trend and possible causes for seemingly new infectious diseases. But I don't want to summarize the conclusions: I want you to go read it. You won't be bored and you'll learn a lot (most definitely even if you've read books like The Hot Zone or the Coming Plague).

Some other notes:
* The author has a less human-centric attitude and a lot of sympathy for the animals, like horses or apes, who sometimes are actually the first animal a disease spills over into only to later infect humans.
* He has a wry tone. When noting the euthanasia of a large number of monkeys (even ones likely not infected with a disease), he notes no humans were euthanized despite equal exposure.
* He provides full references. Some of those papers are quite readable by a non-expert such as this review ([...]) of the importance of bats as reservoirs for infectious diseases.
* The stories are often told from the perspective of the scientists trying to figure out what the heck is really going on. The author is also not afraid to explain when scientists just don't know -- and how they might figure it out more.
* The author went on several field collections where he might have been exposed to a disease being investigated.

If I had any criticisms I would have two:

* The author notes the problem of calling African hunted wild meat "bush meat" which has unsavory connotations to many Europeans and Americans despite Europeans and Americans also hunting wild animals for food. And then he still calls it that repeatedly for the rest of the book (hunted animals are a major source for new infections). I realize this makes it easier to read but it was a bit jarring.
* There is a long, imagined story in the chapters on the origin HIV that is, essentially, imagined entirely with details about a possible river fisherman who gets infected with HIV early on and brings it downstream to the (then) Belgian capitol of the Congo. Elsewhere in the book when the explanation for the origin of a disease required some imagination to fill in a plausible sequence of events, the imaginary stories were a lot less elaborate. I don't think the story detracts from the accuracy of the book: something like that had to have happened to explain the origin of HIV (specifically HIV-1). I was also perfectly entertained and learned a bit about the cultures in the region, but it stood out. It might annoy some so I note you can safely skip ahead when you hit it.

I call these two things out, but even so the book is still excellent. I have some interesting papers I want to read. I also feel I know more about how infectious diseases "work". Best of all, I am less fearful of them as well.

Spillover: Animal Infections and the Next Human Pandemic
By Thomas Jones
I have a science background but not in the biological sciences. Over the years I have followed much of the discussions about HIV/AIDS, SARS, and other outbreaks of infectious diseases in the popular press without being able to put it all together. This book provides that overall view and a status report on our efforts to deal with this ongoing threat. In a few spots there may be more technical information than many may want but it is presented in a way that allows one to move past it without losing the thread of the discussion. The book provides a description of the work done by the professionals on the front line and challenges they face. This is an important subject that we all should all be aware of. The book is well worth reading.

Excellent, Vital, Gripping Book
By Yarrow
I can't recommend this book highly enough. Quammen's writing is vivid yet measured, detailed yet gripping, and he possesses true talent as a narrative non-fiction writer. His ability to explain complex scientific ideas and processes in layman's terms is fantastic, and made this book such a joy to read. Though pandemic disease is often written about in ways that are hysterical and melodramatic, SPILLOVER is not a fear-mongering book.

I also deeply appreciated Quammen's awareness of the animals involved, and his respect and empathy for them. It's subtle but ever-present in his choice of language describing them.

I hope this book is assigned in high schools-- it was so inspiring it made me wish I could do my undergraduate schooling over again and become a scientist.
