About the Author

Mark Burgess is the founder, CTO and principal author of Cfengine. For the past 20 years, he has led the way in the theory and practice of automation and policy based management. In the 1990s he underlined the importance of idempotent, autonomous desired state management (“convergence”) and formalised cooperative systems in the 2000s (“promise theory”). He is the author of numerous books and papers on Network and System Administration and has won several prizes for his work.

This is an intellectual book. I wish that the book spent more time on practical applications of promise theory. There are a number of examples throughout the book, but I found them insufficient to fully explore the ideas being presented.

Interesting, but...

This is certainly a unique way of thinking about connectivity and interaction, but if you're already familiar with enterprise architecture and good design principles, you already know a good portion of what this book aims to provide. I like the overall message of the book, and I liked the way promise interaction was described between agents, but I didn't like the vocabulary used throughout the book. The author consistently uses "big" words and complex sentences to describe simple topics, and I think a good portion of it is just hubris, completely unnecessary, and I felt it detracted from the overall reading experience.

There are two broad categories of technical books published by O'Reilly. The first and probably the most over represented focuses on getting engineers up and running with the latest "new thingy" aiming to change the landscape of software programming, design and operations. Docker/Containers. Microservices/Go. FP/Clojure/Scala/Haskell. Apache . This second category of O'Reilly books contains timeless gems, such as this one, offering real insight, sound reasoning and expert guidance that all engineers come to treasure, not because it helped resolved a pressing issue but because it transformed their thinking and in turn gave them the inspiration to design, develop, deploy and deliver much better managed systems with a high degree of confidence and understanding of the dynamics at play - big and small. Mark has a wonderfully natural way of communicating complex subjects in his talks and books that I've long coveted. This one is no exception. Distilling and sharing a deep and broad understanding of a technical subject, one that has been mulled over many years of research, seems to come so natural to Mark in his writings. This book does indeed live up to its title, somewhat rearranged, in PROMISING to change how to THINK in terms of SYSTEMS of COOPERATION.

He is the Book Review Editor of the Journal of Applied Psychoanalytic Studies, an associate edi-tor of the Journal of Psychotherapy Practice and Research, member of the editorial board of the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association, past member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Psycho-Analysis, and an editorial reader for Psychoanalytic Quarterly. He is the author of Broken Structures: Severe Personality Disorders and Their Treatment (1992) and Quest for Answers: A Primer for Understanding and Treating Severe Personality Disorders (1995). His more than 130 scientific publications also include thirteen edited or co-edited books. I see this book as narratives of a person who is not only a poet, academician & therapist but also has experienced the psychological stages one goes through during immigration & acculturation. Being an eminent psychoanalyst & prolific writer, Dr. Akhtar's books are always wonderful reads. Being an immigrant psychistrist & psychotherapist, I think I live through the pages of this book & thank him profusely for writing this masterpiece.

Excellent book

First of all, I want to say that I love this book and the way the material is presented, from simplest to the complete and comprehensive.

It covers the usual course material of a fist DSP/signal processing class. The first chapter starts with looking at common signals, such sinusoids, exponential etc. but presents then not just by an equation by many graphs and pictures with emphasis on visual understanding. Matlab code that produced these figures is included and teaches these in a way to help the student to further their signal manipulation skills. Then end of chapter exercises are concise and actually helpful and not an IQ test. What is remarkable about this book is that it often includes examples of a real life process of how a signal might have been created, such as it does for the half-wave rectifier giving a circuit realization. This book does continually through all chapters and is unique for DSP book. In the linear systems chapter, the author goes much further than most in helping through graphs, the understanding of convolution. There are probably 20 pages on convolution a subject which because of ridiculous simplicity so confuses all of us.

The Authors then cover the Fourier series, giving once again examples such as the 60 Hz powerline, the CB Radio booster, and other amplifiers are examples of how Fourier analysis is applied. I am myself writing a book on Fourier transform so I was pleased that they have an approach similar to mine in not confusing but making the topic crystal clear.

The Laplace Transform is made clear with several examples and end of chapter examples are actually help bring the essence home. I could go on and on for each chapter. The quality never varies and remains high, all topics are covered well. The last chapter on communications brings the applications of the fundamental concepts all in one place and is an excellent summary.

This is na excelente book in signal theory! It is very comprehensible and provides simple matlab/octave scrips to ilustrate the fundamental aspects of the theory and that approach is very usefull to consolidate the theory comprehension.

I've seen Jon Schmidt's videos on youtube -- the Piano Guys -- and when I found out he has a piano-teaching method, I was intrigued and bought it for my son to give to me for Christmas. ;) Everyone in my house plays the piano except me, and I thought the New Year would be a good time for me to make some progress towards rectifying that. A little more than a week into it, I can play Lullaby, Three Blind Mice, Ode to Joy, Reveille, London Bridge, Frere Jacque and three or four other songs. His teaching method is clearly explained in a series of lessons at the beginning of the book -- read the lesson, practice the corresponding songs for each day of the next week in the section with all the music. He has this game where you're not supposed to make a mistake -- pretend that if you hit the wrong note, you and the piano will explode. You can take as much time as you want to hit the note, just make sure you hit the right one or BOOM!; it's not only fun, but nice in that you don't spend a lot of time undoing poor playing habits. I HIGHLY recommend this program -- if you WANT to play piano, this is a joy to do. I'm having a great time with it. (Let's face it -- piano is all about practice and nothing is going change mental resistance to putting one's bottom in the seat except a strong desire to DO IT.) See you at Carnegie Hall, fellow late-bloomers! We CAN do it!

its a nice book but..

I bought this book as a teacher to teach a teenager piano. He already had a background of learning the piano but needs more motivation. The book has many fun songs but it's not gradual learning. It doesn't start from easy to harder. It's all a bit random. Not exactly what I'm looking for but it will have to do since I've spent almost $20 on it. It's presentation is a bit boring too. Overall it's an average book. Could be ALOT better.

This book makes teaching piano a breeze. It is literally step-by-step. It's true that the songs are not super easy, but as the method directs, the emphasis is on learning to read music. So to make it more simple, the student should play just the melody line and even forget about the rhythm until the notes are perfect. It is compared to learning to type on a QWERTY keyboard. As a teacher (aka mom) I enjoy all the "fun songs" because they really are fun for me to play, not just the same old arrangement of songs everyone knows. These have a new twist and are great arrangements.

The worst thing was the recommendation of the use of Kelp

There's absolutely nothing about this book that will lead to "Medical (grade) Marihuana". No attempt to remove the sediment of the low grade fertilizer materials. The worst thing was the recommendation of the use of Kelp, to augment the harvest. Kelp contains appreciable Chloride ion which accumulates in the leaf. Product thus smoked must create "Dioxins" upon combustion. These books are bunk.

Courtney is funny and self-aware

I am a huge Bachelor/Bachelorette fan. A friend of mine told me this book was great so I was curious to read it. It was funny and interesting. I watched Ben's season and I, like (almost) everyone else I thought she was terrible! But this book really made me change my mind. I can see how her sense of humor, looks and history made her a big target for the show. She reminds me of some of my friends who were raised in other countries where you say what you think without worrying so much about other people's feelings. I am sure the producers really took advantage of her personality and made her seem much worse than she is.

I appreciate how she accepts blame for the part she played in everything and how she doesn't really badmouth anyone but explains what happened. The only thing I find puzzling is her insistence that Ben is a hottie. I don't see it!!

Unlike Andi Dorfman, Courtney was smart enough to get the help of a professional writer. Also unlike Andi, Courtney accepts responsibility for her actions and keeps loving forward instead of dwelling on what she lost. I'd definitely recommend this book to any fan of the show.

Highly Enjoyable

Okay, I'm going to be completely honest here. This is not a brilliant book, it's not great literature, it's not a contribution to the world of art. But it is very satisfying and enjoyable reading. Robertson is almost too revealing (thanks for letting us know how the show affected your bowel movement, Courtney). Whatever you thought of her on the show, she comes off as extremely likable here. She - and her ghostwriter - tell a coherent story, reasonably paced, with the right amount of detail. She also reveals quite a bit about how the show is made, which I found fascinating. I'm giving this five starts for the pure pleasure of reading it.

Fascinating Must-Read for Bachelor Fanatics

This is a revealing look both at what goes on behind the scenes in making The Bachelor and, whether intentional or not, at the raunchy lifestyle and persona of this Hollywood-model turned author. The biggest takeaway is that producers, through selective editing, can amplify conflict and create viewer tension by depicting Bachelor/Bachelorette contestants as either Mother Teresa's or budding Ted Bundy's. By the end we can't be sure whether Season 16's Bachelor winner, Courtney Robertson, was a mean-girl villain or a somewhat willing victim. There's plenty of salacious dirt to go around.

The book is peppered with locker-room language and lewd details such as the number of men 30-year old Courtney has had sex with (not that many according to her and primly rounded off. She also has a rule against going all the way on first dates with men she might be interested in getting serious with later on.) She describes her favorite positions for intimacy either alone or with a partner, complete with the Cosmo-inspired name for one of them. Robertson identifies the guy who bestowed "the best sex I've ever had", an alum of the show. And of course the number of times she and Ben did it on their overnight in the Fantasy Suite. Courtney gives us the names of other Bachelors and Bachelorettes who were intimate in their Fantasy Suite interludes, which commonly involve separate sex with all three of that season's finalists, two of whom are soon to suffer the humiliation of being publicly dumped by someone they've fallen for on national TV.

Robertson maintained a detailed journal during the wearisome downtime between exhilarating dates that some of the girls went on with Bachelor Ben Flajnik. So we learn that contestants for weeks on end are sequestered together in exotic locations with ample free booze but deprived of access to cell phones, TV, or friends and family. This fosters a combustible mix of boredom, estrogen fueled gossip, intense competition, and the unrelenting threat of being sent home.

There's a close-knit brotherhood/sisterhood of former Bachelor contestants, whom the show occasionally convenes for parties and brings back for the summer spinoff "Bachelor Pad". What's surprising is that so many gorgeous, nubile female alums, who were publicly virtuous on their previous seasons, make themselves readily available for the alumni hunks. If your name is Emily M., don't read this book.

Once a winner is selected the winning twosome is kept separately in seclusion for about four months, until the episodes air. That hiatus is when two people from often totally different backgrounds first encounter their partners' cultures by long distance phone calls and a few clandestine arranged dates. There was apparently little time during previous taping sessions to have discussed with each other such basic topics as religion, politics, one's views on saving versus spending money, and their respective levels of education. When each episode airs they see for the first time how they were portrayed and what the audience saw their partner doing and saying to the other contestants. Thus, the winners frequently breakup sometime after they have milked the notoriety and financial opportunities offered to them (such as what one gets paid for being on Dancing With The Stars) after the final results are shown to the public.

Lovable Ben comes off as distant, self-absorbed, and more interested in being with his buddies than with Courtney. His mother is painted as snobbish (her first question to Courtney was "Why didn't you go to college?"). Courtney's mother's mantra was "All men are scum" and she raised her daughter as a prude. Courtney, of course, ultimately broke out of those constraints in high school, which she barely completed, and she has continued to accelerate through life in the passing lane. Like many other Bachelorettes she falls regularly for "bad guys" despite having her pick of almost any man she wants.

The book is fairly well written, aided by Deb Baer. There are plenty of inside info lists, such "How To Get Noticed on the Application to The Bachelor", "Arie's Kissing Tips", and show creator's Mike Fleiss' "Banging The Bachelor". The lists are thrown into the narrative somewhat indiscriminately, however. It's hard to remember from 2012 the many contestants referred to by only first name so fans may want to have a computer handy to Google "The Bachelor Season 16 Cast" for pictures and bios.

Some critics have called The Bachelor "fantasy football for females" (and eye candy for a few voyeuristic males like me). But ladies, be careful what you wish for. Another lesson of "I Didn't Come Here To Make Friends" is that appearing on this show can be life-changing but there's less than a 4% chance of a happy ending. And even the winners can be losers.
