Anne Burton is the owner of Beantown Handmade pet apparel and accessories, and she has been crocheting and sewing for over ten years. Anne started designing for pets when she adopted a Boston Terrier puppy in 2005, and since then she has designed sweaters, hats and accessories for dogs from Chihuahuas to Great Danes. Anne lives with her husband Michael and Boston Terriers Bean and Lily in Nebraska in the United States.

Great Book for Crochet Patterns for Coats & Hats for Dogs

I've been trying to find the patterns for some of the pictures of items in the book for years. (The famous Boston Terrier with the green hat with holes for his ears to stick out.) I'm glad that I was finally able to track down this book! I love to crochet & yes, I own a dog. I've been wanting to make the "famous" hat, who's picture has been passed around for years. Now, I'm a lucky owner of the pattern (& many more!). This book is for someone who loves to crochet & wants to dress their dog & others. I plan to make some of these items & place them in auctions to help dog rescues. This book & patterns will keep me busy for a long time!
This item was sent as soon as I ordered it, however, mother nature had other ideas & I received it late because it spent 4 days in Illinois! I will buy from them in the future & recommend them as a good company to do business with.

Great pictures and ideas, poor pattern writing. Not for beginners.

I wanted this book to make some clothes for my short-haired dogs, so they don't freeze like crazy on their daily walks in the Midwestern winter. I'm only partway through my first pattern choice (the Dogzilla sweater) and am already disappointed. For starters, the pattern says to use double crochet throughout 99% of the pattern (US terms; lists treble crochet for UK stitch terms), but the picture CLEARLY is of a sweater made almost entirely of single crochet (US terms). This is annoying, because I've now wasted time doing an entire sweater top in a stitch that is too loose to be of any use in sub-zero temps, so I have to re-do the entire thing in single crochet to make it stiff enough to actually keep the wind from blowing through. Upon looking at several of the other patterns, they too appear to call for single crochet, based on the picture, but double crochet based on the instructions.
In addition, the instructions could be written better (for example, not telling you which stitch to insert into - if done correctly with double crochet, as the pattern calls for, the ch 3 is the first st and the first 'actual' dc goes in the second stitch, but when doing this, the counts are screwed up). I'm used to reading Leisure Arts patterns, and other books/patterns which are very specific for each and every step, and don't leave anything up for assumptions or guessing. This book definitely isn't for beginners in crochet, as you would need to be able to adjust everything for the mistakes and poor writing and use of terminology.
I give this book 3 stars for ideas and pictures, but knock off two for poor technical writing and incorrect terminology. The book should have been proof-read (i.e. pattern tested) by both US and UK users to assure that the terminology used for each conversion was correct and yielded the same project.

Pictures make you smile

The cover alone will entice you to buy this book, but the contents are even better! I'm not an experienced crocheter, but the instructions in this book are very easy to follow. I found the items fun and whimsical- what more could you ask for?
