I was very happy with the condition of the textbook that I purchased. It was about $10 less than my college book store, I didn't have to wait in the super long line at the book store, I didn't have to pay for gas, and as an added bonus: I didn't have to pay for shipping! Yay! Thanks amazon!

Love this I have an 90's version of this

Love this I have an 90's version of this. I absolutely love these mathematician's they are very good at explaining math (Algebra, Trigonometry, and Precalcus concepts). I wish they would do a complete Geometry textbook and a complete Calculus textbook. I even wrote to Cengage and put in a request for the future about these mathematician's. (Hirsch and Goodman).

this was an excellent book and series

Given that the book was for beginning level Spanish learners, this was an excellent book and series. The story lines are simple, yet the story gets you into a situation like marriage and relationships and stays there using most words associated with the situation. The book also adds peripheral knowledge like job, traveling, parents , etc. to round out your knowledge. The language usage is given IN CONTEXT which a textbook does not give enough of. Repetition is key in learning and this book does that given the context. This is a great book for the beginning Spanish learner.

The story is stupid but it's part of a nice little series for Spanish language beginners. I've order other novels that purport to be for beginning Spanish speakers - but they are not. This one is excellent for, say, a second semester Spanish language student.

Fun and Fabulous Flowers

As an advanced crocheter, I own many crochet books, most of which tend to disappoint. This book does not disappoint. I too, like the author, adore flowers and find many motif books lacking in new or creative flowers-- same ol' thing. These designs were wonderful. The realistic flowers are great, and the whimsical, fantasy flowers are fun and worth trying for d�cor. I already have made several flowers used to decorate my greeting cards, and have made sunflowers in varying yarns as little gifts too. I sew, so I plan on making some smaller flowers, for spicing up tops and other items I make.

I specifically like:

1) The intro pages (with photos) on adding craft items to the center of flowers as stamens.

2) The well written, easy instructions. No diagrams here, but the instructions are easy enough, and nothing so complex that I am wanting diagrams.

3) Print in this book is easy to read, so I don't need to keep picking up the book from my lap or table. Lately, several books I have bought are printed in soft black ink and too small of font.

4) The wonderful variety of yarns and colors used to make flowers, as well as the featured projects from flowers on jeans, to decorating shower curtains. The white flowers used for wedding d�cor were really professionally looking.

5) The nice hints and suggestions found on several designs, such as crocheting only one row when using a carry-along yarn.

Needless to say, I am very pleased with the book and highly recommend.

There IS something new under the sun

Most new crochet books have little to offer that's new to an experienced crocheter; but I took a chance, ordered this book, and have not been disappointed. There are all kinds of flowers and multiple versions of each to choose from. I'm enjoying just sitting down in the evening and "picking" a flower to make with leftover yarns in my stash. Although the flowers lend themselves to lots of projects, I'm just making whatever strikes my fancy with a vague notion of eventually creating some kind of freeform floral collage. The poppy pattern is spectacular, and -- as one who loves leaf motifs -- I find there's a wonderful variety of leaf patterns to choose from (the fern and ruffled leaf are a couple of my favorites). The author also tosses in some nice ideas for embellishing the flowers,such as using purchased craft stamens, novelty yarns, beads, buttonsm and the like. For me, the real fun of this book is the process of crocheting rather than aiming for a particular project to be completed -- playing Simon Says with a pattern and seeing a lovely flower magically emerge from my hook. Plus, following these patterns opens up my own creativity; now I feel I could pick up a hook and start designing a new flower or two of my own. If I had one quibble, it would be that I wish the book were spiral bound so that it would lie flat on my lap when I'm working. However, that's true of most crochet books.

Lovely flowers!

These are the nicest set of flowers I have ever seen in one book. Many are realistic (Columbine, Daffodil), while others are "classic Irish crochet" (roses, leaf). Entire book is in color with glossy pages. Flowers are clearly pictured, though it is not always easy to find exactly which picture goes with which directions. If you have any questions, though, the author has provided a web site where you can ask...and she is a fast responder! Great product!

A lucid treatment of anisotropic elastic theory, especially the elastic interaction of a dislocation with an interface

I turned to this book for information on a very specific problem among the many facets of anisotropic elasticity theory addressed by the author: the interaction of a dislocation with a free surface, or with a planar boundary for a layer of different mechanical stiffness. I had read about the treatment of this problem using Stroh's 2-dimensional dislocation model and analytical continuation in the complex plane in numerous journal articles. Prior to reading Hwu's rigorous treatment of this problem, however, I did not understand how the authors of these articles used analytic continuation to extract the boundary conditions from the continuity of displacement and stress at the interface.

Instead of presenting the boundary conditions as "obvious" or as the result of "standard analytic continuation arguments" (as indifferently observed by the authors of various journal articles), Hwu clearly explains how Liouville's Theorem (a concept found in all complex analysis books) is used to arrive at the result. Liouville's Theorem states that a function which is analytic in a given region of the complex plane must also be constant in that region. Therefore, if a function in a given region is analytic, that region would necessarily be free of singularities/dislocations. By invoking Liouville's Theorem (p.102, Ch.4), Hwu makes it clear that each side of the interface (i.e. each half-space) may only be represented by a sum of functions that are devoid of singularities. Thus, if the dislocation is contained in the lower half-space (i.e. half space#1, which is situated below the interface), half-space#1 cannot include the Green's function G(z) corresponding to the dislocation/singularity. The sum of functions representing the upper half-space (i.e. half-space#2, the which is above the interface), however, may include the Green's function for the dislocation/singularity because the Green's function is finite within half-space#2. Similarly, the sum of functions representing half-space#2 may not include the Green's function corresponding to the reflection of the singularity/dislocation (i.e (G(z*))*, according the Schwarz reflection principle for harmonic functions). On the other hand, the sum of functions representing half-space#1 may include (G(z*))*, because (G(z*))* is finite within half-space#2. For a good treatment of the Schwarz reflection principle see Dennery (pp.80-82) Mathematics for Physicists (Dover Books on Physics).

Almost everything you need to know about calculating the strain field or Peach-Koehler force on a dislocation near an interface or surface is contained in Chapter 4 "Infinite Space, Half-Space, and Bimaterials" on pp.87-114. What I have learned from reading this chapter in Hwu's book is vitally important in my research work. Only the level of understanding achieved by reading a book of this caliber is sufficient for the dedicated research scientist or engineer to have confidence in his calculations.

The brilliant treatment that I have described above, however, only takes the reader up to the first four chapters (pp.1-113) of this outstanding book! In addition to the laying the groundwork for the treatment of half-spaces, the author addresses wedges and interface corners (Ch.5: pp.115-158); elliptical and polygonal holes/voids (Ch.6: pp.159-186); interfacial cracks and delimitation (Ch.6: pp.187-23; inclusions and their interactions with dislocations (Ch.8: pp.239-275); surface indentation and the elastic theory of contact between two adjacent bodies (Ch.9: pp.277-332); thermoelastic effects on voids, cracks, and wedges (Ch.10, pp.333-367); piezoelectric materials (pp.369-410); and plate bending (Ch.12: 411-434). Chapters 13-14 (pp.435-543 address stretching, voids, and inclusions in laminates: Chapter 15 (pp.545-588) is devoted to boundary element analysis. The remaining pages of this book (pp.589-673) are devoted to its extensive appendices, tables, references, and indices.

Peter Hall devoted 15 years of his life conceptualizing, researching, and writing Cities in Civilization. What brings a city to its golden age? Hall (Cities of Tomorrow)?a distinguished professor of urban planning?applies this question to cities ranging from Rome and Athens to Glasgow, Memphis and Palo Alto in his new survey. His conclusions, like the book itself, are diffuse. Examining cultural belle epoques, Hall contends that it was, ironically, the restrictiveness of the official artistic culture in turn-of-the-century Paris and Vienna that fueled startling innovations, as new artists were forced outside the mainstream. Looking at technology, Hall argues that an unfettered market is a great stimulant to invention?as in the heydays of Glasgow's shipbuilding trade and Manchester's cotton textile manufacturing?but, as both cases show, it also leaves cities vulnerable to the losses that result from other cities improving on their initial innovations. Turning to the fusion of cultural and industrial innovation?using L.A.'s film industry and Memphis's pop music scene as examples?Hall asserts that the success of both rests on recognizing a "society in flux" and catering to "the deepest emotional needs" of an important, untapped market. Hall next examines the great successes?and boondoggles?of urban planning over the last two centuries (as well as in imperial Rome) before ending with a coda in which he applies his accumulated insights to the future cities. Hall's broadmindedness allows him to draw useful insights from thinkers as diverse as Joseph Schumpeter and Michel Foucault. Like Braudel's and Holmes's, Hall's thesis here is that "the biggest and most cosmopolitan cities...have throughout history been the places that ignited the sacred flame of the human intelligence and the human imagination." The Jacques Barzun of the city

This book reminds me very much of Jacques Barzun's FROM DAWN TO DECADENCE both in size and scope. Barzun looked at 500 years of Western cultural life and Sir Peter Hall has much the same interests, although he goes back some 2500 years and is more narrowly focused on urban culture. The title CITIES IN CIVILIZATION could be the other way around as Hall is interested in the Golden Ages that seem to have been a feature of all the great cities in history. "The Renaissance" he says "was an urban phenomenon; so was every great burst of creativity in human history." Hall then is seeking the civilization in cities.
Two other books that this one could be (should be, has been) compared with are THE CULTURE OF CITIES and THE CITY IN HISTORY, both by Lewis Mumford. Hall knows this and quickly dispatches the comparisons. "I do not at all share the Mumfordian view that the great city is doomed." Fair enough but his work remains valuable to urban historians and Hall's comment that "Mumford was fundamentally a brilliant polemical journalist, not a scholar" is uncalled for and irrelevant. I'm glad Hall got his academic tetchiness out of the way early and didn't bring it up again, because being subjected to such jibes and digs over the course of the 1000 pages of this book would have been unpleasant. And Hall doesn't need to resort to that anyway.
This book is a detailed, well researched exploration of the unique nature of the city as "a crucible of creativity". The first section of the book looks at artistic creativity - the most recognizable type of Golden Age and most closely associated with the foundation cities of Western civilization - Athens, Vienna, Florence, Paris, London and Berlin. Other themes are innovation and its technological and economic manifestation in urban settings. Here we visit Manchester, Glasgow, Detroit, San Francisco (more accurately Palo Alto and "Silicon Valley") and Tokyo. Hall then looks at two cities - Memphis and Los Angeles that he says offer a mix of artistic, technological, and economic exuberance. He is referring to the music and film industries. In his final section he acknowledges the emergence of regional urban areas and global cities and while recognizing the challenges they pose, he is not daunted and remains optimistic about the future of urban life. His coming Golden Age of a new urban order faces three challenges. That of transport technology and sustainable urbanism, an unequal urban world (the megacities of the Third World) and the threats to economic, family, and civic life.
If persons with interest in any aspect of urbanism don't find some mention of their pet subject in this vast sweep of urban life over the last two millennia, it's simply because they haven't waded through. And that's the only caveat about Hall's work. In the best traditions of old English learning this book is dense and it's not written in the snappiest of prose either. Cities are a testament to the slow processes of humanity. You'll have to rely on one of those tendencies - patience - when working your way through this book. In the end it's well worth it.

A superb analysis of how cities induce innovation

Do not be put off by a conventional title. Under the appearance of academic urban history this is an account of the urban sources of cultural creativity and technological innovation throughout history, from Athens to Florence, to London, to New York, to Paris, to Los Angeles, to Silicon Valley, and beyond. It deals with art, culture, music, technology, business, power, dreams and nightmares. Wonderfully written by one of the most distinguished urbanists in the world, this book delights, informs, and explains why certain people in certain places create, prosper and enjoy life, and others don't. A Masterful Historical Study of Majestic Sweep

Peter Hall's book "Cities in Civilization" is a masterful work with majestic sweep. Although not meant for everyone, this book provides insights into history and culture like no other. Hall looks at the golden ages of cities to illuminate their influence on great cultural achievements as well as economic and technological development, and then draws comparisons to discern what it was about these places that enabled them, of all cities, to become what they became at a particular time in history. The creative bursts of classical Athens, Renaissance Florence, and Shakespearean London are thoroughly discussed and utterly fascinating. The music of Vienna and the artistic creativity of late 19th and early 20th century Paris are literal courses on Western culture. The decadence and creative explosion of Weimar Germany is thoroughly explored before Hall turns his attention to industrialization and technology.
Hall is especially good, in the midst of his analysis, at discussing various theories of social change from Marx to Schumpeter, and Weber to Harold Innis. He details the reasons for industrial and technological growth and invention in 18th century Manchester, 19th century Glasgow, and 19th and 20th century Berlin. His discussion of Detroit and Henry Ford is particularly interesting. Silicon Valley and Tokyo are also discussed, and never does Hall loses sight of how their creativity permanently affected human civilization.
His section on "The Marriage of Art and Technology" is fundamental to an understanding of mass culture in the 20th and 21st centuries. Hollywood and "The Delta" region around Memphis are discussed for their impact on movies and popular music. These two sections are utterly fascinating. And his lengthy last section, which some readers may find the least interesting, deals with how many of the world's great cities have adapted to deal with increasing size and changing needs. Here Hall profiles the changes in the cities themselves, as well as changes in the cultural and social environment, of ancient Rome, and modern London, Paris, New York, Los Angelas, and Stockholm. The social experimentation in equality and how it affected housing in Sweden is particularly interesting.
All in all, if you have the stamina to read 1,000 pages you will be served a wonderful course on the development of Western culture and material civilization, as well as gain a fuller appreciation for the role of the great city in history. We are all in Sir Peter's debt for his years of study and the preparation of this book. His erudition and immense learning are greatly appreciated.

You must put it down

Extremely well written and interesting to read. I'd say "you can't put it down", but it's so heavy you have to put it down to read it. It's a terrific biography as well as filmography, and includes many collectables and photos of Hoppy wanna-bes. Interesting business insights too! Grace Boyd's life is more intriguing than most romance novels. Hoppy as a role model is unsurpassed. Russ Cochran and Steve Geppi did a great job putting this package together.

If your a fan or have any interst in this iconic figure, it's a great book. Super pictures of Bill Boyd and Topper, insight into the films and film making process, and some understanding of the relationship the actor had with his wife, Grace. Plenty of movie memorabilia, and discourse about the 40/50's Hoppy craze that swept the nation as a result of his film popularity and self positioning as a TV pioneer. Yes, before there was Davy Crocket and coonskin caps, there was Hopalong Cassidy and kids running around in black Hoppy outfits. Great effort about someone greatly beloved in his day. Kids of today are disadvantaged in not having screen role models like Hoppy to be entertained by and look up to. Much like Clayton Moore with the character of the Lone Ranger, Bill Boyd became Hopalong Cassidy, and was proud of it. Sixty six films and two seasons of TV episodes, Hoppy was the man in black.

About the Author

Toufik Mansour is a professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Haifa. Dr. Mansour has authored/co-authored more than 200 papers and is a reviewer for many journals, including Advances in Applied Mathematics, Discrete Mathematics, Discrete Applied Mathematics, European Journal of Combinatorics, and the Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series A. His research focuses on pattern avoidance in permutations, colored permutations, set partitions, words, and compositions.
